And whilst they throw words at each other, Ukraine is still being shelled. Pro-Kremlin youth camps also sound like an echo of a rather dark part of human history.

I would laugh at Russia if they fired nukes. Then again, I might be dead by the time I heard about it.

Rhode Island thanks you for being mentioned in the same sentence as things actually important to the world. But seriously, this seems more like posturing than anything else. If Russia doesn't flash an ICBM in the West's face every so often, they start getting afraid we might forget Russia has nukes.

This should remind everyone why it is important that no American, British, German, French, Canadian, or other NATO soldiers ever set foot inside Ukraine.

This is the first time in recent decades that Russia has threatened to launch a nuclear holocaust upon the NATO alliance.

We might be opposed to what Russia is doing in Ukraine but are we willing to destroy the planet just to stop them from carving the country up?

It's important that we cave into empty posturing by a Russian strongman upset over not getting his way with the smaller countries neighboring his?

Its posturing to try and keep the west of balance

By sensationalizing it we're only playing into his hands. Putin's far from stupid, hes playing the long game with the Ukraine and his short term strategy is to keep the west unsure of his plans by acting aggressively at one turn then passively at the other. Before it was with the aid convoy, now its with this business.

The only way that the west can stop putin is by matching his brinkmanship and doing something themselves. I'm not normally an advocate of military force, but if NATO stationed forces within the Ukraine while also opening up talks with the separatists this entire crisis could be ended. Then we go take care of ISIS...

Putin wouldn't dare use nuclear weapons, we would just respond back. And destroy the Earth in the process. It's a political stunt to throw the west off from Putin's true plans, whatever they may be...

Is it just me, or does Putin in the article look like he is about to rap?

And, to not drift entirely off topic, I agree that Putin has LOST HIS MIND!

Let us reflect on the History of Russia...

We might be opposed to what Russia is doing in Ukraine but are we willing to destroy the planet just to stop them from carving the country up?

Russia has had words to the effect of "we will be willing to escalate to limited nuclear exchange in face of conventional aggression" as stated defence policy for well over a decade.

This isn't technically news.
He's threatening MAD because that'll terrify those who don't want war or intervention anyway. MAD isn't strictly the risk in war in Europe, tactical nuclear exchange is. The US maintains a stockpile for European air forces, in Europe, of 180 B-61 nuclear gravity bombs of various developments - transitioning to the Mod 11 and Mod 12 variants which offer essentially, standoff nuclear JDAM glide bomb.
B-61 can be dialled up to 300kt, approximate to older warheads for the Trident strategic SLBM, and others carried on weapons like Minuteman ICBM.

Russia maintains a stock of theatre ballistic missiles, all nuclear capable, such as Iskander, Spider, FROG-7 etc.

It would only be likely to escalate to full strategic exchange if "battle for East Ukraine" terms into "war for East Europe" or the full whack of "European Ground War".
There is absolutely nothing to be gained escalating straight from tactical nuclear exchange to strategic nuclear exchange.
