Opinion: RAF bans on pin-up girls for nose art are stupid.

Postby Couasia » Sun Jul 27, 2014 9:12 am

So, since 2007, pin-up girls have been banned from being painted on RAF aircraft, because MoD bureaucrats say that they may offend Muslim and female personnel.

I personally think that the bans are stupid. Painting nose art, especially pin-up girls, has been a time-honored and morale-boosting tradition since World War I. It allows pilots and crews to think of their aircraft as 'their aircraft'; and, painting their aircraft during lulls in action is a nice reprieve from combat duties.

In addition, none of the 5,400 female personnel in the RAF have filed a single complaint in protest of the practice; therefore, I'm of the opinion that the bans were done in the name of political correctness rather than any real benefit.

What does NSG think?

Officials admitted they had no record of any complaints from the 5,400 women in the RAF.

Maybe they were too intimidated to file complaints?

Or maybe they don't care. The kind of women that join the military aren't exactly the tumblr," everything is sexist and kill all men" crowd.

So you let your Jeremy Clarksonesque outrage fester for seven years? It's anti-political correctness gone mad.

Probably. Too bad RAF officials cared too much then.

The ban is sensible for an organisation which has a history of negative behaviours towards female personnel.

I'm as big a fan as anyone of pin ups but save it for private time with the kleenex.

I don't see anything wrong with it. As far as I'm concerned female pilots could also have beefcake on their planes if they want. It may be somewhat offensive to Muslims but it's not like it was intended to offend them. They don't have naked Arab women everywhere.

1. Oh, the Daily Fail...how I wish people would stop thinking that vile rag is a legit source.

2. IIRC the last time the RAF did any sort of nose art was probably the First Gulf War, so this isn't even relevant.

Common sense at work. Surely the military doesn't want people to think they're a bunch of chauvinists who view women as a talking fleshlight that they use in between rosters? In the same right, I'm equally sure there's been a long standing ban on government workers putting sexist bumper stickers on the back of their Mondeo and so far I'm yet to find anybody who gives a fuck about that.

Who cares about offending people? If you fly a plane in defence of your country, then you should be able to draw whatever the hell you like on that plane as long as you don't damage it.

Or you know, we could just accept that portraying women as sex dolls is pretty offensive towards women (yeah you might just have to take my word on this one) and conclude that such a portrayal is completely inappropriate to be featured on government property.
