Well, that's an unusual and specific career choice. Not "soldier", not "air force officer", but something very specialized.

So, let's talk about career choices and when people made them or hope to make them. That's a legit topic. I knew I wanted to be a scientist since childhood, but I didn't settle on biochemistry until I was an undergrad, and I didn't pick my speciality (bioinformatics) ... ever. I just kinda fell into it by being in the right place at the right time to land some interesting jobs.

I am very grateful to the opportunities and security provided by my country and wish to give back everything I can. I chose that career path because I find treason to be especially unbecoming, especially during a time when our country is recovering from years of hate, division, and war. It escapes why during peace and prosperity, there are still those who would betray the people.

Money, politics, and blackmail are the usual reasons, at least here in the US.

I don't know German politics all that well, but I know that Merkel's policies aren't universally accepted. There are some who want her to take a harder line with the rest of Europe, especially the southern countries, and others who think she's pushed austerity too far. If one feels very strongly in either direction, it's not unthinkable to help the country(ies) "wrongly punished" by her policies get an advantage, and if one has access to German secrets, well...
