Best Arguments against Democracy/Republicanism

Postby Losers Warehouse » Thu Jul 17, 2014 10:37 pm

Just throw me some good arguments against Democratic forms of governing. I prefer responses from this frame of thought, however pro-democratic responses are acceptable. Economic policy, foreign policy are largely unimportant, this will be solely about domestic affairs and a state's approaches to civil rights and political fredoms.

Arguing against democracy is an un-defendable position.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for dinner.

Corrupt Dictatorship

Its leaders cannot effectively tackle long-term problems that require solutions invoking short-term costs to voters because voters punish anyone who inflicts short-term costs on them.

An example of this is global warming and pension reforms. No elected politician is going to be able to do anything close to what is necessary to solve either problem because any effective solution would require entire systems to be revamped/reformed and its going to create too many ennemies/lost votes. What you need is someone who is strong enough to do what is necessary, and doesn't give a damn what the corrupt, short-sighted, and useless voters think (even if these voters are but a sizable minority and the majority of voters are in fact quite competent, the minority is enough to ensure that in party to party electoral competitions, no one is incentivized to behave in a way that would lose their votes). Someone who isn't interested in winning elections but actually in governing. That's not what you get with democracies and definitionally, you can't get that because the whole thing incentivizes the use of votes as a meter stick for success.

Democracy's checks and balances by the majority means its leaders are forever shackled to the majority. And the truth of the matter is, often it is the case that the majority simply doesn't know what is best for itself. In those instances the ability to vote leaders out becomes the systems greatest weakness.

Yes, it is, if one values human liberty, dignity, and other 'good' or 'virtuous' things. But I'd for the sake of discussion like to see cases for the unpopular stance against the democratic model.
