Hobby Lobby. Porn Star Crafts DIY Birth Control

Postby JesusOfNazareth » Fri Jul 11, 2014 8:16 am

http://www.salon.com/2014/07/09/theres_still_an_easy_way_to_get_contraception_from_hobby_lobby_but_its_nsfw/
[Just when it began to seem as if there might be little hope for Hobby Lobby employees to receive all contraceptive coverage mandated by the Affordable Care Act, one woman has given us all a reason to believe again. Her name is Ela Darling, and she’s a rising ladies’ porn star.

Darling stars in “How to Get Contraception From Hobby Lobby,” a new X-rated short video for the pornography website WoodRocket.com — otherwise known as “the team behind SpongeKnob SquareNuts” – which spoofs the Supreme Court’s recent decision to “protect” the craft supply corporation’s religious freedom. The performer teamed up with director Justin Donaldson (of Funny or Die) to illustrate how the court’s ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. doesn’t condone the corporation’s choice to provide just 16 forms of contraception, as it might seem.

No, no — in fact, the clip shows that the decision actually protects Hobby Lobby’s religious right to provide 17 different forms of contraception, the last of which isn’t mandated by the ACA — but it is readily available at a Hobby Lobby near you! Just glue together some popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners and sparkly bits of fuzz the way Darling does and you’ll have yourself some homemade birth control.

Now, I'm of a cynical nature as far as what the porn industry is willing to go to in order to make a few bucks. I understand the purpose of satyrical humor in the political theatre. That said, should anyone take a porn starlet seriously in the topic of birth control and religious freedom?

What about the long standing feminist argument that porn objectifies/degrades/endangers women? Are the various women's rights/liberation groups ready and willing to accept Ela Darling as one of their celebrities?

If this was one of the various laws designed to get the porn industry out of a locality, like the requirement to wear condoms during the filming of porn in Sunland, California, would you give a rat's ass?

And why shouldn't this go in the existing thread on the Hobby Lobby case?

It touches on the porn industry and the women's right's movement, and the unlikely relationship between the two, as well as the money aspect.

I find it curious that people find such a relationship to be unlikely as opposed to logical. After all, the rejection of traditional moral norms and sexual liberation of women should be compatible with the goals of such movements.

Well, perhaps it might be that I could be considered an "old timer", because I can remember broadcast news stories and newspaper stories of feminists protesting x-rated theatres and promoting scientific studies that porn led to increases in cases of violence against women.

Therefore, I would be surprised if NOW or NARAL or Feminist Majority offered MS. Darling an opportunity to speak at one of their functions.

Honestly I have no idea what those organizations champion any more. I tried understanding them. This forum has witnesses to that. But right now I have settled for the fact that I do not understand them and newer will.

Thanks for pointing out the typo.

I do think it's humorous that she actually supported Hobby Lobby by buying the supplies there. :)

I should have thought you'd recognize the satirical point - or is it irony? - in doing so. Not that it was a very well-thought-out bit of satire. Satire is not easy, which is why Mr. Kaufman remarked that satire is what closes on Saturday night.

So the OP is a fit about a porn star joining up with some Funny or Die people to make a satirical video on the Hobby Lobby decision. Okay...
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

I think that for her case, showing that you can buy stuff to induce abortions at Hobby Lobby (something that the birth control Hobby Lobby disapproved of could not do, incidentally) it's fine. She should not encourage others to support those woman-hating fuckheads though.

edit: and no problem for the typo. Thank you for fixing the thread title.

Not in a fit, but somewhat amused, and intrigued by the implications of the situation.

Do you think that Ms. Darling will soon be a guest speaker for NOW, NARAL or the Feminist Majority?

Only if you think Stephen Colbert will get a show on FOXNews.

I think I've seen him as a guest on The O'Reilly Factor.

As for Ms. Darling, who knows for sure? This could be the publicity that those groups need.

What about the long standing feminist argument that porn objectifies/degrades/endangers women?

I yearn for a future where we're able to educate people with electric brainhats and perfectly communicate that groups are made up of individuals with diverse opinions.

Feminist organizations aren't some massive hive mind. Some are fine with porn, some aren't.

Why shouldn't we take a porn starlet seriously? I'd think that someone whose main job is sex for money would be a bit of an authority on birth control. And religious freedom for that matter given the many religious laws of abstinence and prostitution.

And I also don't think that feminists have a problem with the actresses within pornographic films. I think their problem is with the film directors, producers and porn industry itself for their underlying misogyny. I'm caught up on why she shouldn't be a champion for the feminist movement.

Though I will say that as far as satire goes this wasn't very funny.

This is the same person who honestly thought feminists would vote for a Republican because she castrated pigs. he either doesn't care or is so enamoured by the months-old news his Facebook feeds from O'Reilly and Glenn Beck that it's never going to get through to him.

Op, are you saying that just because the person speaking out against the ruling in a satirical way is a porn star, it means that her opinion can't be taken seriously?
