As someone who is 25 and uses social media I'd say your mom has a horrible concept of social media, and the advice she gave you can harm you in the long run.

It's not only that. I also had some friends in the EMAC (Emerging Media and Communications) degree and my ex-girlfriend uses social media for a living.

It is a bad idea overall to actually deprive yourself from social media nowadays and not make an online exposure.

Just right now my dad was telling me that every new customer he has had for his business has come from people googling the website we created long ago.

Indeed, however, it also depend on other factors (for instance, if you go into business and you plan to broaden your online exposure you probably want to give up some of that anonymity).

It's basically where your priorities lay more often than not. You give up some anonymity when doing business online, but as a private individual you're not really hurting yourself if you protect your identity online more often than not.

Twitter has its uses for a younger "text messaging" demographic.

I've never gotten used to twitter.

Quickly phasing Soldi's Ass.. it's actually pretty strong. It's lost some ground with the younger folks, but it's not going anywhere for a long while.

Twitter and Instagram are gaining ground, but not taking its place.

What I meant by that is companies and individuals who have small businesses are now using social media to actually gain traction. It's kind of a new phenomenon.
