Fun thing: the United States Navy also policed the oceans looking for slavers off Africa starting in 1819 (slaves could be traded within the states, but further importation was disallowed). It was probably somewhat upsetting for the crews that many of the slave ships they captured were from their own country.

Oddly enough, the USN was never officially segregated. They needed plenty of strong men with strong stomachs and had a perpetual manpower shortage, so didn't enforce racial discrimination the same way the US Army did following the Revolution. Hell, at the Battle of Lake Erie, about 1 in 4 US sailors was black.

Stephens. If you're going to be claiming any serious knowledge regarding the era, then it isn't convincing when you can't get the names right. And, yes, it wasn't uncommon for people who disagreed on political issues to be on friendly personal terms. Till recently, that was seen as a positive.

i was reading though this and i saw something about the South being a traiter to the USA, but u have to remeber that the USA is also a traiter to British Crown.

Absolutely. Treason can be justified under certain extreme circumstances, especially when one does not have political representation.

yes but theres no differance, only the northern colonies rebelled at first most of the south was loyalist area in the Revolution

And then many of the colonies ended slavery, realizing that it was an inhumane practice, while others had no such crisis of conscience.

I am a chick, and when I was in my mid-20s, I went through a phase of being obsessed with the Civil War. I still love when I find Union memorials scattered around. There is a really beautiful one on the public library in my town with stained glass windows and sculptures of Union cavalry. Also love the one in Memorial Hall at Harvard... That building has awesome architecture.
