Perhaps I should clarify that one sixth according to a survey, in which about 2000 Americans participated? If it makes any difference...

When we're talking about countries, it shouldn't be too difficult.

No, geography is really easy; even someone with a basic understanding of geography should be able to know that Ukraine is in Eastern Europe. Hell, just from the news reports, they should know that it borders Russia, and that really narrows it down.

I'll be honest.
I can't reliably label all the african or south-east asian countries.
All of the americas, europe, the rest of asia, and australasia I can do just fine.

HOWEVER:
In africa, and this may be controversial, but I don't think the "National" geography is very important. It's more about knowing which parts of the landmass are broadly which culture (Not tied to nations, imperialism accidentally the continent.), which religions dominate where, and which areas are most developed. THAT I can manage.

In south-east asia (Indochina basically) it's a similar issue.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

I'm fairly confident I can name any nation on a major landmass. The ones in the Pacific that are little island groups would trip me up though.

Honestly, whilst Americans are pretty dumb at Geography, many people here in Britain aren't much better, don't think I've ever met someone here who's accurately told me where Serbia is, most people I've met just assume its the Russian word for Siberia.

I wouldn't be able to, not with africa. Particulary central africa regulary has me stumped, and I might switch some nations around.

Neither could I get middle america done, to be honest. It's a group of tiny countries. Yes, I can find Panama. Who cares about the others again, aside from the people living there?

How?

You can't express an accurate opinion on foreign affairs if you don't know where things are and how geography locations play a role in politics. If you don't know where Ukraine is, you can't get a good picture of the country. If some people think Crimea is in the US, that can be dangerous.

:o You just insulted Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Belize, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Costa Rica the land of Democracy and no military. Nicaragua the land of Beef and a good military, Honduras land of Lempira the Native Chief who held the Spaniards back, Belize former UK. territory, El Salvador tough little nation and Guatemala the land of the Marimba and Mayans.

I cannot resist
