First Grader Suspended on grounds of sexual harassment

If you TL;DR, here's the basics:

A boy in the first grade was in a reading group in class (Age 6), and kissed a girl on the hand. School authorities claim it was sexual harassment and suspended him. Parent of the boy in question says the girl was fine with it, the two kids are basically "boyfriend and girlfriend". Parent of girl in question says the school district was right in suspending the boy.
What do you think NSG? I think it's pathetic, and reflects how the school districts are run nowadays (badly). This is something that really shouldn't have happened, in my opinion.

I believe they put in that policy to combat bullying but this is just take things a bit too seriously.

Also, they are boyfriend and girlfriend only from the boys mothers POV.

Have millions of schools and one (beyond) questionable decision is bound to happen every now-and-then... That's just how it goes. So OP, I don't think that this is a testament to how crappy schools are, but just how crappy a decision was made by a school director. Unless this is consistently happening, be certain this is a one-time unfortunate event.

According to a USA Today article:

District superintendent Robin Gooldy told The Associated Press on Tuesday the boy was suspended because of a policy against unwanted touching.

"The focus needs to be on his behavior. We usually try to get the student to stop, but if it continues, we need to take action and it sometimes rises to the level of suspension," he said.

I figured this would be an interesting tidbit.

As I'm only seeing the mother's claims here and what the schools acts were, I'll have to reserve judgement.

But on face value I would say a case of sexual harassment should necessitate that the behavior be harassing to the victim. As neither the girl or her parents seem to have said anything in the context of the article, I'm not about to assume whether it was interpreted that way or not. Parents are not reliable sources when it comes to a child's school related behavior.

The problem is that this isn't a one time event. It seems decisions that people deem so objectionable are made quite more than you think by schools and, hell, people in general.

A student with a history of disciplinary problems gets one more and is suspended. Clearly this is a travesty and all US schools should be torn down at once and the rubble burned.

It is very good that this happened.

Sexual assault is greatly under-reported and young men develop these habits early on in life. This was a future sexual assaulter/rapist, and it was taken care of immediately.
