You forgot the Roman Republic after the Marian reforms but before Caesar. I'm sure they would adapt to modern technology pretty quickly.

And the Imperium of Man would Pwn every last one of us.

I wouldn't put the Mongols there, much as I'd not put Vikings, in that I don't think Empire building was so much the aim as compared to a general rampage through the world.

Interesting that you'd put America there since many would shy from calling it an Empire, though it is one.

How about the Roman Empire?
I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Pardon? Genghis Khan was into building an Empire, and maintaining it. But the damned Sultan had to piss him off, execute him diplomats, and seize his goods. All he wanted was mutually friendly relations! *sob* :p

If not the top 3,

Napoleon was the world's greatest strategist, he was just unlucky. At Waterloo, Field Marshall Blucher just so happened to arrive at the time he did, forcing Napoleon to use the Old Guard. Once they retreated, his army collapsed.
Though the Mughals were great, they fell because of bad family members, not that their empire was bad.
Prussia was defeated numerous times during Napoleon's Reign. When the mobilized in 1805 (I think), they were defeated within 3 weeks, at Ulm.

I agree, it took the Allies 8 Coalitions of at least 4 nations per coalition 17 years to defeat Napoleon. That was a little one-sided.

The only reason Imperial Russia lasted so long was because of their many troops and their cold winters.

3. Napoleonic France (controlled the majority of Europe, for longer then anyone in modern history)
4. Pax Romana (The Known world...nearly all of it, for 500 years)
5. The Greek Empire of Alexander the Great (Died with him.....but it was an awesome feat)
Gun control is for wimps and commies.

The American "Imperium" is not a particularly conventional ones in terms of direct territorial rule. We would, however, date the era of US dominance as post WWII-present, or for clarity's sake, 1949-present, following Britain].

To be a most powerful empire, I suggest that one must be the singular most influential global entity present at a given point in time. The first such contender is obvious the Mongolian empire beginning in the 13th century, who influenced pretty much everything going on outside of Australia, the Americas, and the Pacific Islands (and at first or second most land area controlled, must be considered regardless of definition). Next, we have the first pan-oceanic empire, the Spanish Empire, which enjoyed about a century in the golden sun before being displaced by the French in the mid-17th century, who were in turn forcibly displaced by the British in the mid-18th century, who then enjoyed a period of unprecedented global ascendency for two full centuries. In the present period, we enjoy an era in which the US displays a dominant influence. In order of their period of uncontestable global dominant influence, we have:

1.) British Empire
2.) Mongolian Empire
3.) Spanish Empire
4.) French Empire
5.) American "neo"-Empire

As I would measure it. There are some fuzzy lines - you might interchange French and American, or Mongolian and Spanish, depending on where you draw your dates beginning and ending global primacy. We definitely have a period of European primacy on the globe in the "colonial" era, starting somewhere in the 16th century or so.

Historically, these have been the five empires which displayed a dominant influence over the world. Other empires, such as the Roman ones, the Chinese ones, the Ottoman empire, Japanese empire, Russian empire, Soviet "empire" - displayed contested or primarily regional influence, sharing the stage with others.
