I've only heard of them once. When they got their asses kicked by a Buddhist monk on Deadliest Warrior.
Considering that Deadliest Warrior is one of the worst shows which tries to explain and offer 'realistic' outcomes, I certainly would not bother even giving what that show presented a second glance. Considering it even had a guy claim, and admit to lying, about being a Green Beret, it isn't worth watching.
Not only that, but some of the weapon choices were just incorrect. It was meant to be a Maori Warrior, however for whatever god awful reason they added non-Maori weapons. I can't ever recall having seen the shark-tooth associated with Maori. That is a Hawaiian weapon (predominately). I've haven't yet seen a 'stingray spear' associated in context to warfare. I believe I saw something similar to be used in hunting. I'm not even sure if its even Polynesian, let alone Maori.
They should have used Tewhatewha and either a Pouwhenua or Patu. But they thought just grabbing two weapons that were not even Maori was a good idea. Fucking idiots.

They then managed to recover from genocide to wage a war which lasted a hundred years against a much larger and richer country, not to mention the British empire etc.

The Vikings did manage to defeat them time and again too, though. They lost half of the country to them for a long time, too.

When they were divided, all it took was understanding and one good king to use an army of farmers to defeat trained and experienced warriors.

"An army of farmers"
Which proves the point that the Saxons weren't particularly warlike. Alfred was a great King (I presume that's who you're on about), but his successes were more down to strategy and skill rather than militarisation of Saxon culture.
