Ever thought about overthrowing your student government?

Postby Namor » Mon Jun 03, 2013 12:24 pm

To those who still go to school: ever thought about overthrowing your student government?

Don't know why I want to start this discussion, but it seems to me that my school's student council/government is growing too lazy, undemocratic, inefficient and corrupt. There seems to be some sort of untold and invisible criteria to get to the very top, and in my school as long as you're rich, you're in. These people always tend to be the popular peeps, but I just don't get it: how can my fellow peeps stay silent under their tyranny and corruptness? I feel like starting a revolution, but that'll just put a stain into my blank criminal record, so in my school I'm kinda like an invisible dissident.

What do you guys think? ;)

I can't say in my entire journey through school that I was even aware of my student government at any time.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

When they managed to run the Student Bar out of business, I was this close to manning the barricades.

How can you even overthrow it without teacher permission? And why does it matter? I've never heard of a student government that even does anything mildly important.

I had two revolutions at my school. We had captured hot chips and shared them among the people.

People have student governments?

You actually believe student governments accomplish things? They are just figureheads.

It was bloody. Brutal.

The overthrowing of my 3rd grade student government ended with the entire student council sent to the gallows.

The teachers were replaced, the school was made a better place.

At the cost of many lives, that is.

I'm just asking, ever thought about it? Not asking for ways to overthrow it, really, because I know it's not going to go away.

Nope, never entered my mind. I did have the idea to run for it once just to fall a couple signatures short of making it on the ballot.

No, I haven't, because I just don't give enough of a shit about something so unimportant.

What a meaningless gesture.

As if student governments were ever allowed to exert meaningful power in the first place.

To me this is as misguided as poor people rioting and showing their anger by burning the local stores, the only places that were willing to risk serving them. Go punish the rich people, you idiots.

And unhappy students, go picket the school board.

I tried to. I got a group of kids and we ran together as a unofficial party. We wanted to do radical change, but the rules were so strict we could hardly do anything.

I didn't realize that my student government actually DOES anything...
I support peace in Israel and Palestine. The governments and people in power on all sides are an absolute disgrace, and their unwillingness to pursue peace is a disservice to the people they are meant to be serving. The status quo is not simply untenable; it is unquestionably unacceptable.
