Views on Genetic Modification

Postby Uieurnthlaal » Sat Mar 30, 2013 3:09 pm

I just would like to see what other people's views on genetically modified crops, genetically modified animals, genetically modified bacteria, etc. are.
My views are that for things like pharmaceuticals, engineering bacteria to produce them is a great idea, so long as they're contained. Genetically modified food, on the other hand, I'm less certain about, mainly because of the potential of unstudied long-term effects on humans. But what about you?

Good and beneficial in many ways, no doubt, but somewhat poorly understood in terms of health effects.

Until GM foods are decisively proven to be harmless (and by decisively I mean multiple independent researches NOT sponsored by corporate giants), I'll stick with the good old-fashioned organic foods though.
Proud National Socialist. Blaming everything on the liberals since 2000.

The world is full of criminal enterprises and terrorist organizations. The most successful ones are known as states.

Life is like surfing the Internet - there's no meaning or purpose, yet you don't really want to quit either.

The fact that slaves are allowed to elect their masters does not abolish the division in masters and slaves.

Don't try to deride me by calling me an "-ist" or "-phobe" unless you are referring to a medical condition or are trying to compliment me.

Socially-liberal capitalist democracy DOES NOT equate to free society.

Contrary to popular belief, National Socialists aren't racists. They simply hate their own race less than others.

Absolutely necessary and a vital tool in dealing with global poverty and starvation.

Yeah, better food, healthier food, food that grows in a wider variety of climates with less fertiliser/insecticide/fungicide use, fuck that shit, right?

That depends on who grows it for you, I don't do regular of-the brand organic supermarkets for a very good reason. Im more co-op & communal organic stores, sounds rather hippy like XD.

It rather doesn't, unless you suppose that millennia of agriculture has done nothing to the various crops you eat.

Most foods I eat tend to be better than what the eastern European states export to France, considering it has been irradiated and who knows what else.

But that's totally different! When farmers used agricultural methods to improve the traits of the food they grew they did it because they were completely selfless and loved babies and kittens or something, whereas the soulless corporations use their laboratories to infuse our salads with Evil Genes of Death and ProfitTM.

Being a GMO it self doesn't pose a health risk.

Some modifications might pose health "risks".

I don't think I am even going to bother anymore to discuss/debate this.

As long as some of those self-important plebs just cease to interfere with scientific progress and research they can stick with their "organic" foods for all I care.

I'm more concerned with what GMO seed providers do to farmers. It seems wildly unfair that the seeds are tampered with to give them a shortened storage life. Farmers are forbidden to harvest their own seeds. It puts more economic pressure on them.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

I think it's actually safer then making plants through conventional breeding (since you're only messing with one gene, not a whole bunch), but i have...problems with the idea that genetic code can be patented.
