Every time I see this reasoning, I feel the urge to emphasize that perhaps we should ban people instead. That's not an option, so perhaps regulating the availability tool used by people to cause a chain of events possibly leading to injury or death would be a good idea?

Guns do kill people, as in they are the thing, the object (well more the bullet and resulting blood loss, but you get the idea) that killed them. Now, this doesn't excuse the person as they did kill them as well, mainly by using an object in a lethal manner, thus resulting in a person's death.
