Like I said, it doesn't take as long to appeal your case as it does to sit on death row. We need to speed up the process in both cases.

Giving them a chance to appeal doesn't take the ten years they'd normally sit on death row.

Oh, really? And what of the cases that took twenty or so years to find someone innocent with fresh evidence?

That gives 10 years to find proof of innocence that would otherwise be lost in the case of "Well, we looked for 20 minutes, didn't find proof of innocence, then stopped for cake, and then your appeal time was up"

Time always produces new evidence. Tht is the primary reason why it takes so long.

If it takes ten years to find proof of innocence, the case should have never been up for the death penalty. I don't want it for everyone, I want it for the Beltway shooters and the Timothy McVeighs.

They all look the same. They all look the same until you find the evidence to prove their innocence.

So does shutting down all the hospitals! Evil people sometimes use hospitals.

I mean some innocent people would probably get hurt or killed in the process, but it stops evil and saves money so it's all good.

Perhaps. No evidence came about for them though. No, I'm saying that the half dozen other people with extremely similar cases who were set free wouldn't appreciate you saying "well, I only want the people who really look like they're bad people to be put on deth row".

Not that alone.

I think you're missing my point. I was pointing out that by cutting into the appeals process it would be a far less just system. Executing one innocent man is too many, but under such a system executions of those innocent of the crime would inevitably increase.

The painful part of this conversation is that we're so close to reaching a consensus, I just can't adequately explain what I'm trying to tell you.

No one lives in Western Maryland, so that would be a negative.

Western Maryland is a folk tale we tell our children here. Even though I live in Carroll county and it's literally right there.
