Until the other day when this was discussed on a local radio morning talk show, I didn't know about "PEMDAS" either.

Then again, when I was in school, we were simply expected to learn the precedence of operations. Period. "Acronyms? We don't need no stinking acronyms."

Which was probably a good thing, since the acronym doesn't indicate that the reflexive operators are equal in precedence. It also excludes modulo, unary, bitwise, and logical operators....

In Australia we use BIMDAS. Which I suppose is kind of the same.

I'm honestly surprised at how few people know about BODMAS or PEMDAS to Americans.

There's people I regularly see that get confused over Galileo Galilei because, and I quote, "I'm not sure if Galileo Galilei is a dude or two".

So I'd say common knowledge over here is "what's your name".

Like they would rather argue on and on over something stupid when they could just use technology to find an answer. It's like they would rather remain ignorant.

My friends are the opposite. We'd be sitting around in the bar after class, and when a dispute about some fact came up, someone would be put upon to turn on their laptop and look it up. Usually me, because my laptop had the longest battery life. Smart phones are a real blessing.

See, before the internet I used to be the guy that people would call on to ask if the Winter Palace was stormed during the French revolution or the Russian, or what the capital of Ethiopia is, or whatever little bit of trivia they were arguing about. I feel so redundant nowadays.

Don't worry there are plenty of other threads for you to have your usual circle jerks in and get your affirmation that way.
You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

Honestly though, why get worked up over an internet debate? I've been on here too long, there's nothing people can say that will make me care anymore.

I don't even get worked up IRL anymore, if someone is wrong I just let them go unless I think they want to learn if they get defensive about it I let it be.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
