There's George Washington - the man kept pretty mum about what he actually believed, even though he did attend services, and was likely a deist - and then Jefferson and Adams weren't exactly Christian as most modern Christians would define the term... which is to say, many people define Christian as someone who accepts Jesus as a divine Christ [savior] figure, and all our assorted early deist/Unitarian presidents don't qualify under that definition.

The first president who can be uncontroversially qualified as "Christian" would be Andrew Jackson, and he didn't actually become a church member officially until after his presidency.

I was talking about Muslims, which er, I would have thought was obvious on account of how I said "Muslims." Even so, with only 20% non-white, it's hardly surprising that there hasn't been a non-white Canadian PM yet. That's solidly a minority, and a large number of them are recent migrants.

The British royals pretty much have to marry Anglo-Saxons to avoid rabble rousing from That Sort Of Person, although there's a tendency toward monoracial marriages in any case (racially mixed marriages making up some 11% of the total, if I remember correctly) probably due to cultural agreement between individuals of the same background.

Nor should it be ignored that Europe generally has far fewer non-whites than America, and again, many of them are recent migrants. (I also doubt that not a single European country has elected a minority candidate, although there's no easy way to check that.)

And finally electing a black man in America is a big deal because of the perceived prejudice towards black Americans from many in the country, which isn't the case for countries in Europe (although with the developing islamophobia in the region, who knows). Not that I said electing a black guy was a big step for America - just that it wasn't a big step for the world.

If you want to ignore demographics then I think a number of countries in Africa got there first on the black president thing.

If you're going minorities generally, Benjamin Disraeli was ethnically jewish, and my knowledge of european political history isn't good enough to be able to say with any certainty about any others.

It's funny, though, that if we're going to glom onto actual lineage, Barack Obama actually has no more in common with the typical black American in lineage than the typical white old-roots Anglo-American. His mother's side of the family tree looks a lot like mine - lots of white Americans, some splashes of this and that, old American roots - while his father's side is East African, which is on the opposite side of the continent from where most African slaves came from.

That's the funny thing that a lot of people conveniently forget - the reason Obama is "black" in America is because his skin is not white. That's the way racial identity works in America, a lot of the time; "black" is a really broad brush to paint with here.
