Argentinians should STOP whining about the falklands or as they call those islands " Las Malvinas", those islands and the people that live in them are BRITISH, not argentinian, and i dont think those guys want to become argentinians, if Argentina takes control of the falklands the people living there would flee to the UK without a doubt and remain british...... but its imposible for that to happen, if Argentina wants trouble i dont think that the UK will remain silent and calm, it will kick argentinas military back to Buenos Aires....... you cannot compare the military and economic power of UK and Argentina, as simple as that........ even if there is a military alliance between Argentina,Uruguay and Brazil, the south american nations would loose that war because of the power of the UK and also because the NATO would participate....... and we know how it works.........

Almost none since:

A) it only applies to about 25 Falkland-flagged fishing vessels.

B) It doesn't apply to British-flagged vessels carrying supplies to the islands.

If someone's already pointed this out, apologies; I didn't read the whole thread.

South American bloc Mercosur to bar Falklands ships

A South American trading bloc that includes Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay agreed Tuesday to close its ports to ships flying the flag of the disputed Falkland Islands, Uruguay's president said.

The presidents of the Mercosur countries agreed at a summit here that ships flying the Falklands flag "should not dock in Mercosur ports, and if that were to happen, they should not be accepted in another Mercosur port," Uruguay's President Jose Mujica said.

Its funny how people think the EU would do something for the UK with the Malvinas situation when Britain is literally is telling the EU to piss off.

Dunno. Would they be willing to board and search any vessel that flies the UK flag?

I'm torn between my dislike of European imperialism in the Americas or at least how the Falklands, to some extent, has come to represent that, and my support of the United Kingdom, as an ally of the US.

It doesn't matter. When they arrive in port and the port authorities find out they're falsely flying a flag they aren't registered under, they'll be in deep kim chee. Like I said above, that could even open them to piracy charges.

It's hardly imperialism when the residents have exercised their right to self-determination.

It is, when GB established the islands as a colony in the 1840s.

How is that any diffrent than Argentina establishing them as a colony? They aren't part of the argentinian mainland, and IIRC Britain is the only country to maintain a constant base on them.

Surely Argentina attempting to deny the islanders their right to self-determination is more imperialistic?

Not so much. British claim... dates to 1690.

Argentina wasn't even formed till 1810.

You could claim that Spain has historical claims to the island. Argentina doesn't.

Spain only has a remote claim through a French colony that was given to them and predated the first British settlement by about a year or so despite the British being the first to discover the islands.

The Spanish colonies at least existed in the right time frame. Argentina didn't even exist when the first British claim was made to the Falkland Islands... and wouldn't exist for more than another century.

The Falklands are closest to Argentina, therefore Argentina should become part of the Falklands.

You don't need aircraft carriers to defend the Falklands. The 4 Typhoons currently stationed on the islands could defeat the entire Argentine Air-Force alone.

True, plus the Argentine claim to the Falklands and the Islas Malvinas didn't really pick up until the 1930s when every single Argentine wasn't given a revised history textbook of the 'official' Argentine version of history regarding the islands.
