Humor is relative. Nothing is ever always funny or always unfunny. It depends on the person, on their sense of humor, light or dark as it may be.

I would argue that a great deal of their inherent humor lies in the universal offensiveness of rape, so I've always felt that indignation that people find rape jokes offensive to be a little disingenuous.

That doesn't seem disingenuous to me, it seems an obvious component of any joke. I don't think that people who find rape jokes funny find any mention of rape to be funny. I mean, if you giggle at the mere mention of rape, that is not an issue of finding rape jokes funny, but perhaps something more serious. Saying that it 'depends on the execution and quality of the joke' is stating something true of jokes regardless of the subject. It's saying they find rape jokes funny, but the joke has to be funny. It's redundant.

I like to laugh at people when they're trying to get a serious point across regarding taboo subjects. Nothing throws someone off when you start laughing during a therapy session for people with relatives killed in car accidents.

Not that I actually think those things are funny, of course.

The point being that anything funny is worth laughing at. Laughing at taboo subjects, to me, helps take the 'taboo' away from them, and pulls the issue out of the darkness. Better to laugh at something awful than to let it quietly fester in the darkness.

The disingenuity is in justifying them by saying they're funny if well executed. There's an element of schadenfreude involved, taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune, and that is what you're doing when you laugh at a rape joke. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, and rape jokes are decidedly not silk purses.

Don't confuse "funny" with "correct".

Laughing about something is different than dismissing something.

So you're suggesting that people who find some rape jokes funny should themselves be raped?

Okay, and how about everyone who thinks religious jokes are funny be made to live a life of devotion to a deity and formulate a basis of truth that their loved ones who have passed away are waiting for them in heaven before we laugh at another joke about Thor nailing Jesus to some wood with his hammer.

People are pretty much always going to be offended by everything. Again, it's all about the person. Some people find them hilarious, some do not. Of course people who have been raped aren't going to find rape jokes funny at all, and people who are religious probably aren't going to find those jokes hilarious either.

But that doesn't mean that other people can't find either jokes funny.

Much of comedy is based upon laughing at the misfortune of others. A joke is funny if it is well-done. If a joke is not well-done, it is not funny. It's that simple. Are you denying that a joke must be well-done in order to be funny? That's what it looks like to me, in all honesty. You're objecting to justifying rape jokes by saying they're funny if well executed. The alternative being someone saying that they're funny if poorly executed?
