Where is the love?

Postby Mike the Progressive » Sun Jul 17, 2011 4:44 pm

As I was having lunch with my neighbor today, we somehow got to the topic of Justin Bieber. Now to clear something up: I hate Justin Bieber. And as I tried to explain this to her, I kept running into several "road blocks" in my argument. First, I made the case that he sounds like a pubescent little bitch. She countered by saying a lot of people do. Second, he makes horrible music that sells millions. She replied that hundreds if not thousands of corporations, businesses, and individuals do this (except not always with music, sometimes it's another product, and she also sidetracked into how this shows one of the evils of capitalism -she's a damn dirty socialist).

And I began to realize something, that I really have no sound or logical argument against the guy. After all I've played black ops to hear guys sound like girls, and while I agree that his music, this product, is horrible, so what? Power to him. He managed to turn shit into gold, kind of like Steve Jobs did with Apple products (as I type this on my MacBook Pro -heh), or like Fox did with American Idol. He found something that makes him money, and he ran with it. People don't have to listen to him, they don't have to buy his products. I don't blame him, I'd do the same thing.

So I've come to three obvious conclusions:

1). The producers or those who fund these horrible, horrible people aren't to blame. The consumers are. They buy his albums, they download his songs, they attend his concerts, they watch his movies, and so on.
2). That this unadulterated hatred for him stems from the annoyance of hearing his fame and wealth due to slight jealousies we have.
3). And finally that my neighbor is a smart gal for a socialist and I, by making a full 180 as a former religious person or ex-smoker would towards their past beliefs or vices, will adopt the complete opposite position that I once held, and proclaim my never ending love of all things Bieber.

As you read this (if you read this), you may wonder, "why the fuck do I give a shit?" And I'll tell you why, nay, I'll ask:

Why do you hate Bieber? Is there a logical reason? Where is the love? Or am I merely, in my semi-druken state, dribbling on with nonsense? Is it possible to have a hot, intelligent woman whose a socialist, or is she a government agent testing my patriotism?

*As always, I apologize for the length.

I hate bieber because I'm envious *nods*

Actually, I just think his music is shit. But so is much of what's on nowadays. *goes off to listen to Wagner and being all snobbish*

I do not hate Bieber, I simply don't care. Then again, I'm not known for hating or liking cultural fads in the first place. They swish past me, just like the deadlines I should reach.

Why to I hate Bieber? Because the True Word of the Good Book told me to. Romans 2:1

If I liked Bieber then I would feel like a pedophile. That might not be rational but that is the closest I can get to verbalizing my feelings about it.

I don't really care about Beiber, however, in the case of 1)., the people who enable and ecourage something are as much to blame as the person they enable.

I don't hate Justin Bieber I just think the jokes are funny; I don't care at all for his 'music' but I can just avoid listening to it and let his fans buy up millions of bad albums, it leaves more good ones for me to buy.

I do like THIS though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kspPE9E1yGM

That's a half truth. I've gone to conservative rallies where there were a lot of attractive women, though because the Democrats dominate in my state, it's easier to find them at their functions than the GOPs. However when I worked for my county's Democratic Party, the women there were grotesque (one being the daughter of a state senator, because it sure as hell wasn't her looks that got here). However when I was sent to the state convention, yeah, some of the delegates were very attractive. So I imagine it depends where. I don't think all conservative women are ugly, at least as much as I do liberal ones.

I hate Bieber becauser he refused to go to North Korea and serenade Dear Leader Kim Jong-Il. His affront to glorious Juche and the worker's revolution shall not go unpunished.

"Never be deceived that the rich will permit you to vote away their wealth." - Lucy Parsons
Socialism is an economic system characterised by social ownership of the means of production and co-operative management of the economy. "Social ownership" may refer to cooperative enterprises, common ownership, state ownership, citizen ownership of equity, or any combination of these. There are many varieties of socialism and there is no single definition encapsulating all of them. They differ in the type of social ownership they advocate, the degree to which they rely on markets or planning, how management is to be organised within productive institutions, and the role of the state in constructing socialism.

Actually I have to say, libertarians party hard. When I attended a week long seminar for the IHS at Wake Forest in June, we got drunk every single freaking night, to where half of the people there were missing the morning lectures. HAHA Some of them may be batshit crazy, but they know how to have a good time.

Because he cheapens music by making crappy lyrics, possibly using auto-tune and sounds that doesn't take skills to make.

Now what I don't understand is why you were met with a roadblock with her counter-argument. I actually oppose Steve Jobs for jacking up the prices of hardware too. I'd say the consumers are as much to blame as he is. After all, what do the consumers really know? I just can't see why you can't hate him for cheapening music. It has nothing to do with "thousands of corporations do this"; you can still hate them all and love "good" corporations/musicians.

Doesnt sound like your very good at arguing, as your points were very valid...
Mike the Progressive wrote: First, I made the case that he sounds like a pubescent little bitch. She countered by saying a lot of people do.

Whilst I agree with her critique of capitalism, her point is stupid. Those people who make horrible manifucatured untalented music ARE ALSO TERRIBLE! Just because 1 person does it, does not mean that everyone else who doesnt do it isnt irritating (in fact by that logic, her socialist argument actually falls apart completely)

And I began to realize something, that I really have no sound or logical argument against the guy.
Your. You had 2 apparently undeveloped arguments.
while I agree that his music, this product, is horrible, so what? Power to him. He managed to turn shit into gold, kind of like Steve Jobs did with Apple products (as I type this on my MacBook Pro -heh), or like Fox did with American Idol. He found something that makes him money, and he ran with it.
Hitler was great at oratory and manipulating people. Should we historically praise his rule over Nazi germany and his killing of the jews because it made him happy and wealthy?

People don't have to listen to him
Unfortunately, yes we do. The guy is everywhere, as in, I cant turn on my TV or radio without him coming up eventually unless I want to go on some music channel/station specifically dedicated to 1 style of music (but how dull is that?)

So I've come to three obvious conclusions:

1). The producers or those who fund these horrible, horrible people aren't to blame. The consumers are. They buy his albums, they download his songs, they attend his concerts, they watch his movies, and so on.
Because they are KIDS. Any good producer worth his job knows how media can influence children. Its bad enough that children are driven to listen to his crap, but the fact that even adults have to listen to it because its everywhere is just annoying

2). That this unadulterated hatred for him stems from the annoyance of hearing his fame and wealth due to slight jealousies we have.
OR a general dislike of untalented people abusing a system to gain money? Not everyone cares about being wealthy

3). And finally that my neighbor is a smart gal for a socialist
Well thats a given ;)

To summarise, I hate Justin Bieber because like many other "artists" out there, he makes a mockery of a great passion, talent and way of life. Like others, his existance serves only to blight the face of talent.

Contrary to the propaganda, we live in probably the least materialistic culture in history. If we cared about the things of the world, we would treat them quite differently. We would be concerned with their materiality. We would be interested in their beginnings and their ends, before and after they left our grasp.

It's the idea that, really, we don't decide so much what to buy. The media tells us what. They're pretty good at it. You could almost think of the consumers as victims, however silly or pathetic that may sound.

I'm with Mike. He's no more annoying than any other artist I don't like.

However I can't say I'm not envious of all the women throwing themselves at his feet.

Good luck to him, etc.
