Other game strategies

Postby Yenke-Bin » Sun May 24, 2009 6:10 pm

This is inspired by the RTS/TB strategy thread. I want to know specifically the strategies you use in First Person Shooters, Role Playing Games, and other genres you can think of.

For me, in an FPS I usually have two types of characters: The Heavy gunner and the recon unit. They are pretty much opposites, which works to my advantage. If I am having a tough time running around and just spray and praying, then I can assume I should fall back and use my recon unit, which consists of a sniper rifle, and the opposite is true as well. If I am sniping and I keep getting overrun by people, then I know I need to pull out my big gun and start spraying lead everywhere.

As for RPGs, I tend to either be the elemental magic caster, or someone that has a short sword and bow combo, for quick attacks. I hate the big loafs with war hammers or axes :P

in FPS games I try to be flexible, but I often go for accurate, high powered weapons. Typically, I am a sniper. I see no reason to engage in a fair fight. It's also the role I excel at, as I'm good at placing shots on people. I do play as heavier characters for fun, however, but always with one eye on the situation. in TF2, I make a surprisingly effective heavy because I don't get into fights I can't win on purpose. I suppose I sound arrogant, but I really am an exceptional FPS player. It's one of my few skills.

In RPG games I prefer the archer. Simple really, I like bows and staying at range. I do vary a lot in RPG games, but I try and play characters that unlock most of the dialogue options, and I studiously avoid 'the sword guy' because I loathe how generic they are. Cloud, Geralt the Witcher, you know what I mean.
...gorgonopsids.

In FPS style games I generally take on a soldier role. I seem to be able to use an assault rifle to maximum effect in any FPS game so obviously I prefer to use them; I make use of cover and fire and manuever tactics and I tend to go for accuracy as opposed to spray and pray. I try to convince my team mates to work much like a real life fire team but it rarely works. In America's Army I am an outstanding SAW Gunner though.

In RPGs I am usually a melee combatant, one handed weapon and shield type fighter but I also like playing spell casters (I am infamous for my wizards and sorcerers in DnD). I tend toward being heroic in my actions, and will usually try to find the best way to talk myself out of a nasty situation as opposed to just charge in and fight.

I don't know about some of you, but Battalion Wars was a damn good game. I used to run around and, instead of following everything the CO said, I would find the best way to clear the mission. I can remember one: Gunships of the Desert. I sent the tanks to destroy the AA vehicles before the infantry formed up with me, to allow the Gunship to shell the enemy tanks while the T copter is safe to escape.

I view backgammon as a game rather like military logistics - you have to keep all your units in contact with each other while performing a fighting retreat.

Oh you meant computer games...

hm. playing Halo, the first one, I could really own a couple of the maps.... particularly that one that is set in a canyon with two 'bases' at each end.... have some twit sniping in one of the bases, grab a shotgun and a warthog, run zigzags up to the base and power slide the warthog right into the entry to the 'upstairs' of the base and bail out. Run up there and just open fire at close range on the sniper with the shotgun. Snipe people from the sides of the canyon, etc...... I tend towards sniping mostly, but love to use shotty's too (playing Half-Life: Counter Strike, I managed to kill something like 6 or 7 people while emptying the magazine of an automatic shotgun at about 50 feet). In RPG, only ever played Diablo II; played as a barbarian, usually swinging two axes. Really played more to get out frustration then anything.

People seem to be talking more about tactics than strategies.

Unsurprising. Don't really get much of the long game in FPS titles or RPGs.

Well first person shooter games are about tactics: methods to win skirmish/battles. Stategy is more about larger-scale methods to win, often conducted over many battles will often draw upon more than one tactic to achive the larger plan. A stratagy employed/attempted by both Britain and Germany in WI and WII was to damage their opponents economy/stratigic resource stream by damaging/preventing their overseas trade. The means employed by them differed but the goal or stratagy was similar, but conducted by different tactics (and counter tactics).

At least thats my interpretation on the defs, please correct me if I'm wrong or you got a better one.

I'm always a sniper when it comes to FPS. I rarely miss. I've had lots of practice.

I also have the tactic of "Sniper Assault," basiclly using the extreme power of sniper rifles at very close range. What I lose in distance I make up for in power and surprise. It's better to do something with one or two well-placed shots than with a whole clip of machine gun ammunition.

As far as RPG's go...I try to balance. I'm a very experienced Diablo II player, and I prefer having a character with lots of stamina and casting abilities, as well as extremely powerful weapons and armor. I like to get up close-I usually use Paladins, Druids, and Assassins as opposed to the more ranged or magic-based classes.

In the original Final Fantasy, I usually have a fighter/knight (great offense and defense), black mage (for those pesky enemies that are more vulnerable to magic than swords), white mage (because red wizards and knights can't cast the high level white magic spells I need to succeed), and someone else, usually a blackbelt for an early game advantage.

In Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube), I find it better to upgrade the inferior guns I already have than to purchase new guns. On my most recent run, I had a very upgraded Punisher (it was free), shotgun (again, free), broken butterfly (free yet again), and rifle w/ scopes (non-automatic). During the game, I relied most heavily on the crowd-clearing shotgun, follored by the punisher. I used my upgraded broken butterfly for boss battles while I used the rifle for regenerators, iron maidens, and other enemies I'd rather not face close-range.

Halo 2 (singleplayer. No xbox live): two words: plasma sword. Even when depleted, the plasma sword is deadly.

Mario Kart? Depends. In Double Dash, I use the heavy DK kart. In the others, I prefer Yoshi. Manueverability and speed over mere acceleration. Plus, being able to bully someone is great.

PS one of my threads inspired someone? Yay!
