As I said, I used to cycle a LOT so I have very developed leg muscles. In the winter of 07-08, I wanted to lose weight. I got a rowing exercise machine and within a month I had gone from 6 mins on difficulty 3, to an hour on difficulty 10/10, at 42 reps a minute. Even if I get on it now, I can be up to that speed within 3-4 sessions.

I wonder how much extra effort it would take for someone who didnt have basic fitness at age 16 to get to such a level?

Well, make them get some more power into their arms and voila. You've got kids with massive hands and arms with good strength, wouldn't be too nice to get in the face, no?

We should encourage kids to go out there and have more sex, not like lazy oral sex, but really acrobatic stuff, that'll motivate them to excercise :p

They don't care. Families will cheaply give kids away in 3rd World countries, it is actually quite a sad thing when you think about it.
Most kids think that war is like CoD, Battlefield and all that, don't they get a shock when they finally realize what it really looks like.

So. . . bomb the Russians?

In all seriousness, does this account for areas that have experienced genocide/starvation on the last 10-20 years? Because I don't believe children in Bosnia are weaker than they were in the nineties, considering they were being starved and killed.

So I can't lift my own body weight, but I can certainly hold myself up for a while if I'm hanging somewhere.

I wasn't the sort of kid to climb trees though, I had this issue with heights and not wanting to fall from them. Monkey bars were fine.

Meh. I was physically weak as a child to the point where I needed physical therapy all through elementary school. It hasn't negatively impacted my life at all. I still exercise (jog 5 days a week, lift weights once or twice a week, granted I can't lift more than 20 pounds) and I'm about average or slightly below average in weight. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses; my weakness just happens to be physical weakness. There are plenty of people willing to help me do the things I can't do on my own and I help people learn how to do the things that I happen to be strong in (I tutor chemistry, math, and physics). I can't balance well enough to ride a bike and I can't swim underwater (I do know how to float though), but that really hasn't been a big deal at all.

Exercise is important but that shouldn't mean that everyone has to be super-strong. They should try to make PE classes more fun so that kids won't get the idea that exercise is just something you do because someone is making you do it. Also, people making fun of me for being weak was one of the things that made me hate exercise when I was young.

How are you lifting that you can't lift more than 20 lbs?

I hardly strength train and while I can't do 20 lbs with my triceps (they are weak and puny), I can totally manage that with bicep curls, shoulder presses and squats/lunges/etc.

My apartment complex gym only has dumbbells for weights, so that limits it to start with...and I just know I tried lifting up a single 20 lb dumbbell with both hands and I couldn't even lift it off the rack. I usually just follow the exercises my boyfriend does but with much less weight. I just started lifting weights two weeks ago though, because I want to be able to lift things on my own. I started with the 3 lb dumbbells and wasn't able to do the 5 lb dumbbells at first, but now I can.

There is a reason I was in physical therapy, and it stopped not because I got better but because it was decided that it wasn't making enough positive difference to be worth the class time I was missing for it.

This is in one country... They didn't even bother to do studies in other countries about this.
In other, this is true, for the UK.

I love how every article on the evils of new technology bitches about how some old skill is dying out. It reeks of people scared that their way of life is dying and stubborn in their insistence that their way of life is the only way of life. It's like when people in Socrates's time complained that books would make people stupid, because they wouldn't ever learn the skill of memorizing an entire epic verbatim. It's like hunter-gatherer's mocking our lack of adequate spear and tracking skills. New skills are developed and old skills die out according to what is relevant to survival. I really doubt a loss in average gripping strength will be the downfall of western civilization.
