Semi Auto Rifles

Postby Mosasauria » Wed Apr 27, 2011 6:49 pm

I'm sure some of you have heard me talking about how I wanted a rifle.

Well, I've been looking at Florida's gun laws(Which are shockingly lax), and found out that there are quite a few semi-automatic guns available. Shotguns, pistols, and rifles are legal. Of course, there are a few models that are restricted(Most of the FN series, the AK series, etc.), but there are still many guns.

So last night, I was able to negotiate a deal with my parents. I would be allowed to get any legal gun, but I would have to pay for and register it. If I decide to get a permit, I would have to pay for that as well.

So, this one goes out to all the gun-nuts of NSG:
What are some good beginner semi-automatic rifles?
Keep in mind that I'm paying for it, and that my budget is around $750...

EDIT: I've been looking into the SKS, and am currently searching throughout the web for it. I would like to know if anyone has any experience with this gun, and some easy and proper ways to modify it.

If cost is a factor, I'd be looking at SKSes.

I just checked, and from what I've found, that's legal. I'll be looking into it. Thanks! :D

What are you using it for? If you're going for hunting rifles, I recommend the Browning BAR. That's what I use anyway. They run over $1000 though, so I don't know about your budget.

Nonetheless, I don't know a semi-automatic rifle would be illegal. If that fits your definition of "lax," then every state in the country has lax gun laws.

A 10/22 is an inexpensive first rifle, and ammo is very cheap ($6-$7 for 100 rounds of CCI Minimags, which is what I usually use for ammo). The 10/22 is also one of the more upgradeable rifles out there.

Of course, I went with the AR15 as my first rifle (I just got the 10/22 recently), but maybe I'm just an oddball. :D

See if you can get your hands on a semi-auto AK-47

They're fantastic weapons, simple, easy to use, relatively cheap.

Plus, you can tell all your friends that you have an AK

This kind of lax.
My budget, however, is slightly lower than $750(Give or take a hundred). And this is including modifications.
Although that looks like one hell of a rifle.

Looking at what I've found for it, it's cheaper than the cheapest SKS I've found. Looking at the ammo and mags, they're also rather cheap. Definitely something to keep in mind.

Possibly not in Florida. The gun laws may be lax, but most of the people seem to have a sort of aversion to guns.

Not that lax, to be honest. Vehicle carry, allowed in a lot of states, at least in the South. Open carry for hunting is a given. The only thing that could be considered lax in my mind is the "Stand your ground" doctrine, and that's not that lax.

My budget, however, is slightly lower than $750(Give or take a hundred). And this is including modifications.
Although that looks like one hell of a rifle.

It does the job. But with such a low budget, I doubt you'll find a riflescope.

Buy a Ruger, something in .22LR, and you're all set to learn as well as legally hunt small game and birds in many states! The ammo is dirt cheap too.

The purchasing and registration are lax. The only things I disagree with are the open carry restrictions and the peaceful journey restrictions.

The purchasing and registration aren't particularly lax. They're the same as just about every other state in the country.

What what what? I've lived in Miami for most of my life and how did I not know this? :palm:

Now I think I might find myself an SKS. It's a pretty badass weapon I hear. It's simple, packs a punch, and can be seen as superior to the AK, at least as far as accuracy. I've heard stories about US soldiers in Vietnam using captured SKS's as DMRs when they didn't have one of their own on hand. I'm not even a big fan of Russian guns, but I've always had a thing for the SKS.
NOTE: This nation is NO LONGER called Southern United Africa as of May 2010. It is now known as the Federal Republic of South Africa.

Well, if you're going for quality vs. price, a Russian SKS would be preferable.
