Depends on the school, region, and generation. But many many impressionable children were taught that black is a mean thing to call someone and that "African-American" is what you should say.
It may be dumb but it's what many people were taught. There are of course exceptions. It seems that African-American is less in style now too. I know some of you are still in school. Don't know what you are being taught now
We aren't being taught anything by our teachers. However, most of my black friends prefer to be referred to as "black."
