I am very much concerned about the extent to which we in the US worship our military, as well as the great deference which the civilian government gives it. Someday there's going to be a coup. Mark my words.

As long as Presidents can work up the same spine a hat-maker had in 1950s, I think we'll be okay and in little danger of a military coup.
Plus, one of the Generals would have to be POPULAR, and generals these days don't really have the cults of personality McArthur or Eisenhower had.

Petraeus is working himself quite a following. Then there's the martyr treatment McChrystal got from the right. The bolded part helps my argument.

I'm an unfortunately rare breed these days - a patriot. I don't personally know anyone who serves in the military, I don't serve, and I'm British. I hate my government and what my country has become, but I love the country itself.

Nope. I just wish to distance myself as far as possible from the current government. It's not the immigrants that's the problem at all - it's the people who already live here.

I think times have to be very bad for a the military to have a coup in the United States and im not going to say its impossible but if a certain person had the right connections and people was desperate and he/she had the awnsers they wanted to hear then that person could cease power just like in history look at Juluis Ceaser historians say he ended the Republic and started the Empire. I enjoy my what freedoms I have and I have no wish to live in a spartan state becuase if the military gains control they will always be recruiting and spending to improve the military against any possible threat domestic or overseas.

I had a random patriotic moment watching that video, I shared it in this and another thread, making this thread about how appreciative I am and how much I feel others should be of the armed forces.

1) I'm 17. I've done nothing whatsoever with my life yet. I have nothing to my name.
2) I'm going to be of the last year group that can get a university education at a relatively affordable price. How can I pass that up? If I don't make it in, dad won't pay for me to go next year and I will join up.

There's also the very real point that I don't think I'm military material, to my own dismay. I may be an undiagnosed autistic, I have difficulty understanding people and taking direction. My health is below par and so is my fitness.
Given all that, I can admire what they do, but not partake in it.
