I think they were poor before Hitler rose to power because of the treaty of versailles, but then Hitler restarted the arms industry, even though they were banned from making weapons, and used the war to pull them out of the deficit.

I don't know what category, but I agree they were doing well thanks to Hitler, it's just no one had any freedom, and if they didn't go to war, they would probably be a lot richer now. Unless you want to go into really deep politics lol.

The Soviet-controlled puppet state of East Germany was able to sustain itself for quite awhile, and in many ways was the best Soviet satellite state. However, there were many problems with East Germany --the most prominent one being the legal immigration of East Germans to West Germany through the now democratic state of Austria, but once the East Germans discovered this, of course, they shutdown the border to Austria as well. This still did not stop people from immigrating through other means, people would pay off guards (who were legible to be shot immediately if they did not shoot on any of us fleeing East Germany) to sneak around the Berlin Wall.

However, what I must say about East Germany is that it's failure was largely linked to the fact that it was nothing more then what it was --that being a Soviet puppet state. Not a "true" Communist republic.

The main reason why Nazi Germany did so well was due to the fact that it -went- to war. It could not have existed as an isolated state, its ideology would have been too conflicted and the entire State would have collapsed within years.
