Shooting seaman all over a sub

I'm not sure about British vessels, but my understanding is that on US boats the senior enlisted man on duty carries a handgun for purposes of enforcing discipline (i.e. arresting submariners who have broken the law). There are also weapons lockers for use in boarding/antiboarding actions. Either case could be where the weapon came from.

however in both cases a lowly crewman (or so rumours are abound) will not have access with extra security on the weapons hold if civilians will be visiting

dunno though it may be a more senior figure but I can't say I've ever heard of that occurring

To be honest being in such confined spaces with the same people for a long time I am surprised more people on submarines don't go a bit mad. I guess that this doesn't seem to happen more often is because of careful screening and good training.

Yup. Being several hundred to several thousand feet underwater for prolonged periods of time within a large metal cylinder must really beat up the human psyche.
