I do not understand how you have a 2 year supply of ammo. How many do you need a day to survive? How did you come up with this number?

Wow. First of all, I did not know the word "hoard" had a bad connotation. I used it because I couldn't remember the word "stockpile". I'm still not entirely sure what the difference is, but judging by the reaction there's a huge one. For that, I apologize.

I am left wondering why everyone doesn't stockpile some food. If you don't stockpile some food why not? I'll admit I do have about a week or two of emergency canned goods, but a year of it seemed odd. Perhaps it's a good idea in this economy to do that though.

I don't stockpile food because I'm poor haha. If I didn't work a crappy minimum wage job I might consider getting a nice stockpile going. My mother used to do that when I was a kid. Good Lord, when Y2K came around the garage was stacked floor to ceiling with giant buckets of every kind of bean and rice conceivable!

Why do some Mormons hoard food? I know a woman who has at least 5-10 years of food hoarded in her cellar. I do not know her well enough to ask why.

It's tied in to the pioneer history of the Mormon people. The trek that the early Mormons made, out to the western USA and, eventually, Utah, left permanent marks upon their faith and their communities. One of these marks is the importance given to being prepared for disasters. Mormon households are encouraged to have two years of food and emergency supplies stored up at all times.

For those who can afford it, it's not a bad idea. However, considering that one in six Americans struggles with hunger, I have to admit that I'm a little iffy about the practice of piling up two years' worth of food in one family's home. Think of how many food pantries could be helped by all those supplies.

I grow my own lettuce, peppers and tomatoes indoors all winter with my aerogardens and I stockpile tortillas(they last better than six months vacuum sealed). If I could find ready supplies of shelf-stable ground beef, I'd be all set.

Cows. A few cows, and a large industrial grinder, and you'll be set. And you could also attach them fart-tank things to the cows, and get free methane. Mod your Trangea, and voila! You're entirely self-sufficient.

Personally, I have no problem with people that want to prep for disasters, both natural and man-made. I wish I could say I have a year or more of food stored, but I don't. OTOH, there's enough squirrels (aka tree rats) around my apartment, that if something really bad happened, I could possibly use my .22 pistol to supplement my food stores.
