It really is incredible how much you put down the pretty amazing work of the engineers who designed that bridge at the time. To create span that large at the time is truly incredible. It is still in the top 20 for longest spans...and it was built in the 30s

The stuff that came out of the depression boggles the mind; the Golden Gate, Hoover Dam, Empire State Building. All held the titles as "largest" for many years. The U.S. basically said fuck the depression and got to work on our infrastructure.

Hell the Empire State Building was built in little over one year. Think about it. Only 13 months. I've seen supermarkets under construction longer than the ESB was.

I was built in a couple of months. New Yorkers are good at getting things done in a hurry.

Yeah but have you lasted more than 75 years?

By the way, I am pretty sure the name was not based on the color, but rather the name of where it was built.

NO but what was built above it because it exists is a tourist attraction, and there are a lot of those little signs talking about the big dig there.

It's a motherfucking bridge. What difference does it make?

that's the problem

it's over-marketed and over-hyped

When it was completed, the Golden Great was a symbol of optimism and inspiration to Americans struggling under the Great Depression. The cultural impact of the bridge was huge; after all here we were with major unemployment and poverty. By rolling up our sleeves and working together Americans were able to construct an engineering marvel that showed them anything could be possible, and that giving in to your problems (ie. A big freaking strait of water) was not an option.

Yep, the opening into the Bay is the 'Golden Gate' and the bridge is what spans the Golden Gate.

Just because other bridges are awesome, doesn't mean the Golden Gate Bridge isn't.

I notice none of those bridges are in Canada. I smell jealousy. I also notice some of those bridges are tiny, and one of them isn't even a full bridge.

And if you want to get started on this "dime a dozen" fallacy, I suggest you remove that mote in your eye and put down GoT for good since it's just an average show.

so it was a populist tactic by the US government to distract Americans from the real economic troubles and issues of their day?

I sank, but they were still using other monitors into the 20th century.

But you can't really compare ships and bridges. Bridges are easier to take care of because they don't have moving parts, and they don't become obsolete as fast because they have a much simpler function.

For the obsolete part...that is kinda true. We have learned a lot about ensuring bridges are safe and can survive things like earthquakes, violent winds, freeze and thaw conditions etc. A lot of the old bridges would not be able to deal with these and needed some serious updating, including the golden gate bridge.

I guess this is a case of "familiarity breeds contempt" cos I never thought the park above it was very interesting either. The tourist attractions in your own backyard never seem as interesting as the ones on the other side of the world.

Just move the whole bridge and place it precariously above an area so that it looks as if it would collapse any moment. Nobody would dare cross under it.

But to make sure it is truly effective we must have you, Donald Trump, walk into Mexico under it.

Good luck.
