I agree, in world war 2 Germany had nerve gas, which one drop of it can kill, however, they didn't use it because they thought the allies had it too. Nukes work exactly the same way. No one uses them, because they fear retaliation.

Nuclear states are less likely to go to war. It deters war, not stops it entirely.

I sometimes wonder why people fear nuclear weapons. Don't we have anti-missile weapons to stop a nuke from hitting a city? Also we can always hide in a underground bunker.

If you argument in favour of nukes is "so others can't use it" wouldn't that mean there isn't an argument against getting rid of all nukes?

Given that the world has already been close to a nuclear apocalypse back when the Russians had that little malfunction with their detection systems or whatever it was, we're better off without them.

And one person with enough nukes to destroy the world. That would have to be a dictator. Which would care enough about his country, or just himself, to not start an apocalypse

That is true, but then again, Chernobyl wasn't a victim of a nuclear weapon, it was an accident at a nuclear power plant.

Fallout from a nuclear weapon does not last as long. But yes, fallout radiation rapidly and exponentially declines over time. A nuclear weapon's fallout does not actually last very long.

The danger of radiation from fallout also decreases with time, as radioactivity decays exponentially with time, such that for each factor of seven increase in time, the radiation is reduced by a factor of ten. For example, after 7 hours, the average dose rate is reduced by a factor of ten; after 49 hours, it is reduced by a further factor of ten (to 1/100th); after two weeks the radiation from the fallout will have reduced by a factor of 1000 compared the initial level; and after 14 weeks the average dose rate will have reduced to 1/10,000th of the initial level.[16]

They're also a deterrent to conventional war between nuclear powers. So no, we wouldn't be better off without them.

And there have been many almost incidents from the Cold War, but we made through and it won't happen again.

I know but you can avoid the fallout if you stay in a underground bunker and wait until the rads go away. It only takes a few years :P

It is similar to something I found when looking at arguments for and against American Gun Laws. If I recall, it was something like this: "If guns are banned. Only criminals will have gun". This could be applied to this situation. While we could try and remove them, rogue nations will likely not let go of them.

Do you think North Korea or Pakistan will give up their nukes? We can't leave only rouge nations with nukes (Although Pakistan isn't a rouge nation)
