Airplanes should not be Classist

Postby Infected Mushroom » Thu Jul 24, 2014 1:01 am

I've always had a big problem with first class travel. It promotes the idea that Money is Everything and that people should be seperated based on how much money they have and what they can buy.

Air travel can be extremely uncomfortable and nauseating, and it can be really bad when its an 8 hour flight. We all have to sit throught those really long flights once in a while, but why should someone get better treatment onboard just because he can pay more? While the majority of the people are forced to sit in extremely cramped and uncomfortable chairs, barely able to breath or move... a couple of rich, priviledged and entitled men and women in suits sit at the very front with extremely comfy chairs, lots of space, around-the-clock attention from servants, and access to unlimited and exclusive priviledges (steaks, unlimited meals, fine wines, more entertainment options). Its unfair.

Air travel should promote equality, not classism. Its not ok that we are so comfortable with classism that we allow it to be so in-your-face. There is nothing more In-Your-Face than to have to sit through an 8 hour+ flight in a under-priviledged position, cramped with the rest of the proletariat while the rich have a hell of a time in the front. This is not cool. Its clear what all of this is promoting; its even in the names (FIRST CLASS tickets? They come first eh?). ''Economy Class'' was clearly invented as a label to hide the true agenda of this entire enterprise, it should more be appropriately named ''Second Class'' (hey if you're not FIRST class than you've got to be on a lower class right? Someone has to be Second or Last if someone is going to be First).

This is a clear sign that privitazing air travel was a big mistake. They're using it to implement subtle propaganda to help the interests of the rich. If its ''okay'' to seperate people onboard aircraft based on class and to limit priviledges and rights to people, then maybe its ok to do it on land too? Why should I even be surprised this is happening? After all, this is what happens when you privitaze air travel. Of course corporations controlling unfair amounts of the world's wealth aren't going to pass up on this oppertunity to reshape the world.

Air travel should be nationalized again and this classism thing banned. All passengers should be forced to buy the same types of tickets and no one should be favored because he paid for a bigger ticket. Redistribute the profits so that ALL passengers (not those in First Class) get a bit more space, a bit more priviledge and rights, and a bit more attention. That's what's fair.

We can't achieve perfect equality on the ground (things always seem so complicated), but at least we can achieve it in the skies right? When we're flying maybe just for once we can do this right and be equal?

What do you think NSG? Should we nationalize air travel and get rid of the First Class regime? Are the seperation by tickets regimes instances of classist segregation? Are you annoyed by the First Class travel regime?

Then airlines should revert to communist class-less system?

Well, there is nothing wrong with people with extra money to buy premium service. If you have extra money, I doubt you would care to sit 8 hours in cramped space with 'proletariat' - who seem able to buy expensive airplanes tickets, while there are a lot others in the world can't.

They're there for business not social welfare.

The world isn't fair. Besides, why only limit to airliners?

I bought a first class ticket so I don't have to mingle with your proles, I am not going to have that changed, I will not coutenance the idea that the common man would have to share seats with their betters.

I think you're just the average lower class individual who is jealous of those with lots of money. Don't worry, it's natural but you ranting on an online forum will not change anything. And even if you were to take this matter to somebody important in real life, they would not even take this view into consideration as it is absolutely ridiculous.

I'm as egalitarian as the next guy, but...c'mon man...
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

this is exactly the sort of attitude that I believe society should discourage...

Unfortunately, as it stands, air travel is one of the systems that promotes it.

I quite fairly don't give a damn....

Mostly because I have a fear of planes and heights, the thought alone scares me and now I'm panicking.

this is about removing special priviledges, and making everyone's lot better and more equal (take away the priviledges from the First Class, and distribute it equally... more space, more food, more service, more entertainment options etc for the majority of air travelers)

I'm not all for the "equal" crap,

but I honestly believe it should be a UN law or some newfangled crap that makes it compulsory for anyone found to be reclining their seat without asking, the person to be publicly executed on the airplane within view of all economy class passengers.

I'd be OK if you ask me if you can recline, but if you shove my in-flight movie a whole foot closer to my face without my permission I want you killed.

Thoughts, /ns/?

Well, since in most aircraft 1st class is usually situated in the front of the aircraft, be safe in the fact that in a crash landing upon the aircraft's nose, those in coach-class will probably be the safest.

But no. If you can afford it, go for it.

I approve.

Can we ban annoying crying babies too? And those vile overweight people who crush you as they take over the aisles will squashing your face on the window?

Not just banning, but giving them less-than-functional parachutes and forcing them to leave the plane.

I'd pay $2000 a flight just for that, screw first class.

The improvement in economy from removing 1st class would be negligible at best when divided over such a large group. And airlines will simply make up for lost income by extending current economy standards into the new space/.

I'm not annoyed.

You get what you pay for. If you want more service, you pay more. It's a natural thing.

The Dutch railways, even while they were still government owned, also have first class tickets. Those are pretty much guaranteed a seating place and bigger chairs and stuff. So privatization of a service is not necessarily the culprit here.

maybe...

I'm not sure you are correct (and even the slightest increase in space would be appreciated, right now its really cramped on the planes).

One thing's certain though, the problem of inequality on airplanes through classism will be eliminated. That's why I think its worth it.
