this is exactly the sort of attitude that I believe society should discourage...
Unfortunately, as it stands, air travel is one of the systems that promotes it.

Given my greater wealth, I should be able to pay to have comfort and luxury amongst men and women of my own class.

I'd be OK if you ask me if you can recline, but if you shove my in-flight movie a whole foot closer to my face without my permission I want you killed.
Thoughts, /ns/?

Infected Mushroom wrote:I've always had a big problem with first class travel. It promotes the idea that Money is Everything and that people should be seperated based on how much money they have and what they can buy.
Air travel can be extremely uncomfortable and nauseating, and it can be really bad when its an 8 hour flight. We all have to sit throught those really long flights once in a while, but why should someone get better treatment onboard just because he can pay more? While the majority of the people are forced to sit in extremely cramped and uncomfortable chairs, barely able to breath or move... a couple of rich, priviledged and entitled men and women in suits sit at the very front with extremely comfy chairs, lots of space, around-the-clock attention from servants, and access to unlimited and exclusive priviledges (steaks, unlimited meals, fine wines, more entertainment options). Its unfair.
Air travel should promote equality, not classism. Its not ok that we are so comfortable with classism that we allow it to be so in-your-face. There is nothing more In-Your-Face than to have to sit through an 8 hour+ flight in a under-priviledged position, cramped with the rest of the proletariat while the rich have a hell of a time in the front. This is not cool. Its clear what all of this is promoting; its even in the names (FIRST CLASS tickets? They come first eh?). ''Economy Class'' was clearly invented as a label to hide the true agenda of this entire enterprise, it should more be appropriately named ''Second Class'' (hey if you're not FIRST class than you've got to be on a lower class right? Someone has to be Second or Last if someone is going to be First).
This is a clear sign that privitazing air travel was a big mistake. They're using it to implement subtle propaganda to help the interests of the rich. If its ''okay'' to seperate people onboard aircraft based on class and to limit priviledges and rights to people, then maybe its ok to do it on land too? Why should I even be surprised this is happening? After all, this is what happens when you privitaze air travel. Of course corporations controlling unfair amounts of the world's wealth aren't going to pass up on this oppertunity to reshape the world.
Air travel should be nationalized again and this classism thing banned. All passengers should be forced to buy the same types of tickets and no one should be favored because he paid for a bigger ticket. Redistribute the profits so that ALL passengers (not those in First Class) get a bit more space, a bit more priviledge and rights, and a bit more attention. That's what's fair.
We can't achieve perfect equality on the ground (things always seem so complicated), but at least we can achieve it in the skies right? When we're flying maybe just for once we can do this right and be equal?
What do you think NSG? Should we nationalize air travel and get rid of the First Class regime? Are the seperation by tickets regimes instances of classist segregation? Are you annoyed by the First Class travel regime?

The improvement in economy from removing 1st class would be negligible at best when divided over such a large group. And airlines will simply make up for lost income by extending current economy standards into the new space/.
