It's always been deliberately ambiguous. It's always been thematically significant that the world doesn't know.

I think he thinks China started it due to the beginning of 4, where your neighbors are all like "omg the commies nuked us" and the shock of the news reporter. But if we're being honest here, would a government really tell its people it was about to cause a nuclear holocaust? The mere surprise from some people is not confirmation China struck first.

I do believe the very, very few hints we are given lean slightly toward "China did it", but we have no way of knowing for certain.

I also found it odd how the war was called "the Great War" instead of "World War III". The latter has a... "cooler" ring to it, so I'm surprised they didn't go with it (unless the war is referred to as "WW3" on occasion, and I simply missed it).

Because it simply wasn't a world war. The war itself was formally only between the United States and China, and while it eventually did spin into including the other nuclear-capable countries it should be noted that there really weren't that many of them.

Ah. On another topic I was curious about, is it ever stated in-game if some parts of the world were spared or if basically the whole earth got blown sky-high?

Not explicitly, but Honest Hearts makes it very clear that not every inch of America was actually subjected to nuclear devastation.

Ah.

Oh, and yet another question (:p): Like ten minutes into Fallout 3 (yes, I'm talking about 3, though it's been a looooong time since I played it), I found a "Chinese officer" at the Super-Duper Mart, and he was killed by raiders. I took his sword and it was OP as hell, especially for it being so early in the game.

Is that an Easter Egg, or do the Chinese actually explore the wastes?

Likely a random encounter. That's one thing I really liked about 3, the whole... randomly running into shit aspect. I usually see a few wasters in front of the SDM.

Yeah, but... what on Earth is a Chinese officer doing in D.C.?

If you go to Mama Dolces in Arlington, you find a bunch of Chinese operatives who have been ghoulified and apparently don't know that it's been 200 years since the world ended. You can also find a pre-war radio broadcast of Chinese propaganda being broadcast from there.

It's always been deliberately ambiguous. It's always been thematically significant that the world doesn't know.

I mean, looking at the lore, I still think it's fairly likely that the Chinese launched first. Mechanized infantry units equipped with power armor were cutting the Chinese mainland apart. They were probably going to fold within a few months, a year tops, if internal concerns didn't cause America to collapse first. The United States had essentially no reason to push the button, unless Chinese missiles were already in the air.

I think a big point of the mystery behind the Great War is that no records are meant to exist to show who started it.

Both China and the U.S. were at fault. It doesn't matter who "started" it. They both started it a long time ago.

The mistake would have been to end it.

I mean the official anouncement said an island off the coast of Main, so Vermont is more or less entirely out of the picture. You'd be closer to Nova Scotia.

I said nothng about those suggestions being this DLC. Nor is it suggested by anyone that this is the only DLC. Other DLCs may feature them.

Whatever happened to the Soviet Union in the Fallout-verse?

I don't think the game ever mentioned it dissolved or anything.

How did America start it? The Chinese were the ones who invaded in the first place, kicking the whole shitshow off. In what way are they not basically responsible for what happened?

It survived up until the Great War, and actually strengthened ties with the US. I think one of the premade backgrounds in the original game was that of the granddaughter of a Soviet diplomat serving at a consulate in LA.

I mean, Vault-Tec didn't really have anything to gain by pushing the button. As long as people were worried about the bombs dropping, they got to keep making money building vaults. Even if the war ended, people would still be scared, and if they ever stopped being scared, well, they get to walk away with a fat pile of cash that hasn't been replaced by bottle caps.

neither China, India, nor North Korea launched the first bomb. It was in fact Vault-Tec's executive of the vaults. He launched the first bomb to fulfill his own prophecy of nuclear annihilation.

Damn, weird how China industrialized so rapidly following the aftermath of WWII and its civil war.

Assuming that stuff happened anyways. I don't know, it just sounds odd to make China more of a threat than the USSR at the time.
