Probably the most innovative things I've ever heard done by a black metal band. Black Metal meets Post-Rock and Jazz. The vocalist reminds me of Chuck Schuldiner.

I've seen black metal spread out quite a bit lately. This is pretty cool stuff.

Arguably the worst popular metal band in existence. Thanks for sharing, now I will go sanitize myself with good music.

So far I haven't heard one single good post-black metal album. Probably not even one good song.
I've posted dozens. "Post"-Black Metal really refers to any post-Second Wave black metal that isn't trying to worship Darkthrone and Burzum. They incorporate different genres into black metal. So, unless you are a trve kvlt pvrist, there has to be something out there you would enjoy.
Altar of Plagues is decent, Deafhaven is overrated but not bad, Lantlos is probably the best. Clad in Darkness, Panopticon, Peste Noire, early Alcest, Skagos, Skyforest, Falaise, and Wolves in the Throne Room (specifically, "Two Hunters") are all good. There's also an album called "The World Comes to an End in the End of a Journey", which is a split album between six different post-black and blackgaze bands.
What I posted earlier (jazzy post-rock mixed with black metal) is a great example of what post-black metal can be if done right:
Clad in Darkness - Revelries & Silence

I tried to be a part of that vein of black metal for a really long time, and I loved its imagery, but I always got this really unpleasant feeling when I listened to it for too long, even though it felt so nice in short bursts. Super desolate, or isolated, or something- I don't know how to describe it. Not for me, I guess. So I migrated back to more popular forms of metal/music in general. I still listen to 'darker' kinds of black metal occasionally though.

That desolate and isolated feeling is the reason why I love it, I can listen to it for hours
Just like doom metal.

Have you heard of NKVD? They're one of the few really underground black metal bands that I can listen to for extended periods of time. Their sound is just so powerful that it feels oppressive, something that I can't say I've heard many other bands pull off (not saying they don't exist, though; my foray into really underground stuff didn't last long).

That being said, I have my limits, I personally don't really like stuff that sounds like it was recorded with a microwave in most cases. Probably an extreme example, but I tried listening to Vomir a couple weeks ago and gave up completely because I literally couldn't hear anything besides static or something.

That album sounds like a chorus of chainsaws on a construction sight adjacent to a helipad recorded on an answering machine in a trashcan across the street. This is Metal, so it's about time the reviewers put on their big boy pants and rated albums for the music, not the fucking production.

Electric Wizard's Dopethrone is really great tho.
The actual song is 10:36, but there's a small hidden speech part at around 20 min.

Apparently you just put "dope" in the title and you got stoner metal.

I don't care if it is black metal, if it sounds sooo intentionally bad quality recording on purpose, it's an instant turn off for me, and I don't really care how high quality the recording is in music.Rob Halfordia wrote:But I also think that an album shouldn't be judged by it no matter what the genre. Sounds more like what industrial music is supposed to be to me.
