It's not poppy in a melodic sense... it's more that the riffs are so simple that they're instantly catchy.

Agreed.

I think death metal nowadays is dominated by poppy bands. Really, if I'm going to listen to death metal, I look back as 90s stuff or listen to "deathrgind" bands like Aborted and Cattle Decapitation.

Honestly, I love Richard Kruspe's tone. And Emppu Vuorinen's. Those are in my top favorite tones. And both guitarists happen to use Mesa Dual Rectifiers.

EDIT: And ESP guitars

This is a fucking Metal thread! Since when has Metal been about being nice!

On that note, why the fuck are people constantly complaining about poor production in Redeemer of Souls? "Oh, there's static!" "Oh no, the audio clips a little!"
It's like they forgot what genre they are listening to.

I've gotten to the point now where I don't care what production the music is in. Some of the coolest stuff I've heard has been raw as fuck...to the point where the guitar is just static, the vocals are inaudible and the drums sound like "bzzzzzzzz".

The quality of recording is part of the musician/band's style, just like lyrics and instrumentation. So I think complaining about it is projecting your own opinions of what a song should be onto something the musician is trying not to be.

I think it really mainly depends on the genre. Black metal, for instance, just wouldn't sound right with the production value of most popular metal bands, and vice versa.

That being said, I have my limits, I personally don't really like stuff that sounds like it was recorded with a microwave in most cases. Probably an extreme example, but I tried listening to Vomir a couple weeks ago and gave up completely because I literally couldn't hear anything besides static or something.

But I also think that an album shouldn't be judged by it no matter what the genre. Especially when the same websites that bash Redeemer of Souls have given Black Metal albums with much lower production near perfect scores. Different genres, I get it, but seriously, have you ever heard Bathory's "The Return"? That album sounds like a chorus of chainsaws on a construction sight adjacent to a helipad recorded on an answering machine in a trashcan across the street. This is Metal, so it's about time the reviewers put on their big boy pants and rated albums for the music, not the fucking production.
