Palmie-chan... Why you do this to me.

Because I'm in a vaccum of anime right now and because horrible puns are a tempting fruit that will send concise content to eternal damnation.
I've been doing more snobbish things though. I read this university-type report about why Western viewers are drawn to anime, a bit outdated but it's solid. Mentions things about relations between individuals in homogeneous and heterogeneous societies and something or other about unfiltered "politically incorrect" content. I can send a link to you...if I find the site again.

Ah! Here it is. It's a few months older than I am, as a matter of fact. But not much has changed in decades for otaku.

Like a lot of anime, it takes a bit to get rolling, but once it does it's fantastic.

Yeah, this seems to reflect my experience of some shows as well.

Maybe they just have issues with turning a lot of the manga into an animation that it affects the pacing of the episodes until the studio hits a sweet spot in production later on in a given series.
This is a problem with just about any media change, look at game of thrones which used to follow the events in the books religiously. From what I hear it's altered events in a number of cases.

I dunno.
Maybe it's just confirmation bias, or the viewer is just unfamiliar with the material that they have a culture shock that requires adjustment.

I dunno, I can justify any position because this topic covers such a huge range of material.

I mean if I think about it there's several factors that affect a viewers enjoyment of a given topic in a given medium.

1. Culture references line up with their own (ie jokes that the viewer finds funny).
2. A setting or environment the viewer also enjoys fantasising about.
3. Protagonist having similar thought processes or issues that the viewer has. (thus giving future conflicts more meaning to the viewer).
4. Good translation of the material (i'm sure we've all seen some language or cultural norms that haven't been reproduced properly).
5. Pacing of the story (Does the viewer prefer more exposition or do they prefer more action packed high octane crazy colour shenanigans?)
6. Experience with the genre (Does the viewer have previous experience watching anime, or reading a certain type of material?)
7. Viewers who prefer living in a fantasy or viewers who prefer living more realistic worlds? What rules do you use and which do you bend/break? (for instance, how strict are you going to apply simple things like gravity of objects falling, will main characters get second chances at living with a suitable enough personal journey?)
8. Production value of the anime or material as a whole (does the studio have experienced animators? do they have enough time to properly iron out issues with production?).
9. Are the voice actors and other assets of production good enough?
10. Is there already a fandom or interest in the material that the viewer shares? (this is usually helpful for acquiring an audience but it isn't without it's...downsides)
11. and so on and so on.

Is Bleach worth watching? I've seen the first episode.

I am still in the Soul Society Arc in the manga and to me that is where Bleach starts going down hill.

Soul Eater.

For the benefit of those that don't know, the basic plot is about an order of teenagers who attend a psycho-technical school helmed by the Grim Reaper who take on the task of keeping evil in check. They're all given living weapons, the eponymous Soul Eaters, that, when they consume 100 evil souls, become "Death Scythes", something that the anime has yet to explain what it is, despite info-dumping everything else. The two main characters, Maka and her Soul Eater buddy, are questing to find more souls after... Some confusing shit about how eating a witch/cat's soul restarted their soul-eating... I don't know.

It's... Bizarre as all hell. It's basically Bleach and Naruto run through Norwegian death metal and then shit out by The Nightmare Before Christmas.

While I'm interested in continued watching, I kinda have to take a break because of just how weird it is. And, well, how kinda non-impacting it is despite it being so weird.

For example: Al Capone is in it. Yeah... He's just kinda... There... And... He's eating souls, with all his mafia buddies who are all wearing masks that are also their faces.

Also, while Al Capone was a big-shot in the American Mafia, he was hardly the "emperor of the underworld", as some schmuck with a samurai sword calls him. That title is more fitting of Lucky Luciano.

The one thing I noticed the most was the anime's opening and closing themes.

The opening is an extremely lazy and annoying J-pop song with some "creepy" scoring that actually has some interesting build-up. Considering the anime's visual tone and style, I'd half-expect WataMote's theme to start playing. And, in stark contrast, the ending theme is a pure, raw, funny, touching hardcore J-punk song about love and friendship... Which, while it's something I've never heard before in an anime, still doesn't quite fit...

It's bizarre, to say the least.

I love Soul Eater, but I understand why it may not appeal to some. The only thing i would have done differently is give it a darker atmosphere as it is surprisingly light for a supernatural fantasy series.

No, Bones messed up, they got rid of a lot of characterization, and went into anime only territory halfway through, with the anime only ending is meh at best.

Now that you mention it, the pacing has been rather off and people have yet to talk about some things. And I am mostly confused as a result.

This is why that whole "wait until a certain episode" argument never works.

Alright then.

There was another thing...

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

I first watched it when I was younger and they showed it on Adult Swim.

Watching it again, I can't help but feel like it's "meh", like I thought back in the day.

If so, then the problem isn't the anime.

Besides, what I've seen has just been... Bizarre, but not necessarily bad.

Yes, he is.

No, Bones messed up, they got rid of a lot of characterization, and went into anime only territory halfway through, with the anime only ending is meh at best.

The manga ending is meh too.

It's like calling yourself a nerd or a geek, really.

Anyway, I'ma read this. Thanks Palmie-chan.

Don't worry, I've been obsessive since I was at least 6. The germs would get in my shoes and I had to touch the freezer three times or else people would trip from stairs, God said so.

I also searched up Soul Eater's version of Al Capone. It's a semi-decent rendition at least.

I've seen things that take a lot of liberties (the previous one is these people). For a laugh, check out Afterschool Charisma.

And other ones which are pretty dead on...but not in context.

I enjoyed most of it. Probably one of the anime's i've seen that could reach a wide audience with a little work.

Well ya, still better than the anime's ending though, least the manga ending has some sense of closure.
