I think it's a little overrated (don't kill me fans) but it's still a good show, worth a watch. Way too long, though.

Stop whatever you are doing and watch it right now.

Like Haven said above, it's (at it's most basic) a story about a talented young boy who is looking for his father. It chronicles his various journeys and accomplishments over several arcs, with each one showing his further progression and improvements.

One of the best things about HxH are the characters: there are a lot of them, with huge variety, and almost all of them are executed with awesome perfection (with a few exceptions of course :P )

It's also a bit more intellectual than most shounen. I also like how it explains the battles, strategies, powers, etc. with great detail.

All in all it is amazing and you need to watch it right now

I see what you are both saying. It sounds interesting enough to at least try. I usually give an anime at least three episodes before I make a "yes or no" choice about watching them.

I thought it was a bit weird how Ed and Al didn't even seem to take any time to mourn him, at least not on-screen. It never even shows them finding out about his death, he just leaves Central and they never mention him again. What, did Pinako never tell the boys that their father is dead? I can imagine some awkward conversations a few years down the line.

Winry: So, Ed, Al, what's it been like exploring the world?

Al: Awesome! We've learned so much about alchemy!

Ed: Yeah, it was pretty cool.

Al: But we're going to keep exploring and expanding our knowledge! Who knows- maybe one day, one of us might even bump into dad!

Ed: Oh, yeah, I haven't seen that guy in ages. Just like him to just disappear after all the action was over.

Al: I wonder where he went? I bet he's been travelling around the world just like us, helping people and learning more about alchemy!

Pinako: Oh, I must have forgotten to mention. I found your father's dead body sprawled over your mother's grave not long before you got back to Resembool. I had it cremated. Sorry, the old mind's going.

Ed and Al:

Pinako: ... He looked happy, if it's any consolation.

Can anyone suggest an anime with dynamic changes in the main character, kinda like Kenichi the First Disciple (it doesn't need to be martial arts).

There are the pseudo classic ones you could try, such as Code Geass and Death Note.

Without spoiling anything, I can say that while some parts just made be go "What!?" there were still a lot of awe inspiring moments. Death Not was much the same way. I recommend Death Note to everyone to at least try. I have also found it is a good anime to introduce some to the genre with; it dispels most people notions of anime as simple "cartoons."

If you want an anime that doesn't overstay its welcome, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann packs a surprising amount of character development in its main character into 20-someodd episodes. Especially considering how unashamedly over the top it gets. When I recommend it though, I always tell people to 1) Bear with the off-model artwork in episode 4, it was a different art director, and 2) give it to the end of episode 8 before deciding whether to keep going.

Another one I would suggest is G Gundam; once you look past the series' extremely generous helping of cheese, it has a LOT of surprisingly nuanced character development among the protagonists. Be warned though, it's basically Gundam meets Street Fighter, and while not quiiiiite as over the top as Gurren Lagann, still gets pretty over the top at times. :P

I cannot believe I actually forgot about that one. It does have great characters, even if some people might disagree, but getting pass that over the top presentation is a chore for a lot of people. I hated it the first time I watched it, but after re-watching it as a favor for s friend, I was surprised by how deep it actually was.

Seconded...no, wait: third.

However if you continue (to at least episode eight) you'll find reality stranger than fiction because...
John C. Lilly was a real person, he did conduct "experiments" with dolphins (and LSD at the same time). He did attempt to communicate with them through computer hypertext, and he did believe them to have a link to some cosmic extraterrestrial intelligence.
