Ack, that new movie was pretty disgraceful, from more than a few standpoints. I will give props that Gatsby's and the Buchanans' houses were imagined quite beautifully.

It's quite over the top really. It may be off-putting for some, but I quite like the maximalism of that film.

What bothered me most was the flagrant disregard for any sense of historical accuracy, if I'm honest.

Wouldn't Spike have to be rich as shit and the living embodiment of conspicuous consumption for that to work?

Arguably, he already is, if we count Twilight's hypothesized wealth and his love of eating gems (which is practically eating money!).

Watch "Secret of My Excess" again and tell me Spike couldn't pull off being a flagrantly rich guy (how he gets rich is another matter entirely).

Now either Twilight or Applejack would be Nick Carraway and Derpy can be owl eyes. Mayhaps Flutters could be Jordan Baker, though that would open up a whole can of shipping.

You mean the music? Maybe. It was one of those things that was supposed to make the story more relevant to our time. Didn't quite work for me. I prefer real 20's music over today's remixes of them.

The rap was stupid. The electroswing made sense though. (It's also my favorite genre of music).
Example of electroswing

Well if that's what it was trying to do, it certainly failed. However, the music wasn't the only thing, the cars were even worse. The novel itself was set in 1922 but I can see the story taking place really anytime up to 1928. However, in the movie, pretty much all of the cars were from 1930 or newer. The Buchanan's Auburn was a 1933, and Jay's Dusenburg SJ was a 35'. That's pretty flagrant considering how important his car (in the book a 1921 Rolls-Royce) is, and automobiles in general are, to the plot. They got Nick's car right, if it's any consolation.

I suppose only a car person would really notice that stuff though, but it bothered me because it destroyed what little of the Roaring Twenties aesthetic the modernized music didn't.

Union Of Canadorian Socialists Republic wrote:In the book, Gatsby's car was a Rolls Royce. In the movie, they used a Dusenberg.

Believe me, I realize. An SJ does portray the 'New Money' theme rather well, but it totally screws up the setting and moves everything from 1922 to the middle of the Depression.
