I have absolutely no justification for this, but I have a gut feeling that if the show was about any other animal, the puns would be irritating instead of cute.

The difference.
I'm linking the page itself, rather than the image, because I think the tags add to it.

"Friendship with Magic" can not work with Cats, Domestic Cats are cute, but real cats are very isolationist and have no social interaction besides their mother and mate.

It could work with dogs, dogs are social creatures. So are wolves.

I'm not sure about dogs. I think part of it may be due to our relationship we have with dogs. We tend to look at wild dogs with contempt because we are so used to them as being pets, however wild horses are seen more positively because the connote a sense of freedom. To have this conflict between our social and individualistic natures drives many friendship stories, and MLP:FiM is no exception (the pilot, "Luna Eclipsed" especially come to mind), and thus makes the horse more identifiable with ourselves in such a struggle.

Wolves also convey a sense of freedom in a way, but people also have largely negative prejudices against wolves.

You do have that right that wild horses are certainly some of the least "intimidating" of wild animals. There be a reason it's not called the Ford Wolf.

I would add that we know that some dogs can be pretty badass (guard dogs, police dogs, et cetera). Ponies (again, being relatively docile herbivores) convey more of a sense of innocence, which is part of the appeal of the show, I think.

Yea, it's kinda hard to write a character like Fluttershy as a dog.

Maybe Ponies have a sense fun too, because of riding.
But, I myself like the idea of carnivorous, or at least omnivorous, ponies.

There in lies the problem that most of the animals humans eat are sentient/can talk in the pony-verse (pigs as the exception), so it seems kind of immoral. Or you could be like Fluttershy and dine on horse brain.

True, true. I will never be able to write as great as F. Scott Fitzgerald though. That man was a literary genius.

I'm reading the Great Gatsby now and I saw the new movie of it. It's an interesting story. I'd love to read your crossover of that.

Sure, of course. The Great Gatsby is universally considered to be one of the greatest pieces of American literature.

Ack, that new movie was pretty disgraceful, from more than a few standpoints. I will give props that Gatsby's and the Buchanans' houses were imagined quite beautifully.

It's quite over the top really. It may be off-putting for some, but I quite like the maximalism of that film.
