I think I've given myself a great idea that I know I cannot possibly achieve: A pony version of Duck & Cover!

It really works with Ponies, because Ponies are social.
"Friendship with Magic" can not work with Cats, Domestic Cats are cute, but real cats are very isolationist and have no social interaction besides their mother and mate.

It could work with dogs, dogs are social creatures. So are wolves.

I'm not sure about dogs. I think part of it may be due to our relationship we have with dogs. We tend to look at wild dogs with contempt because we are so used to them as being pets, however wild horses are seen more positively because the connote a sense of freedom. To have this conflict between our social and individualistic natures drives many friendship stories, and MLP:FiM is no exception (the pilot, "Luna Eclipsed" especially come to mind), and thus makes the horse more identifiable with ourselves in such a struggle.

Wolves also convey a sense of freedom in a way, but people also have largely negative prejudices against wolves.

You do have that right that wild horses are certainly some of the least "intimidating" of wild animals. There be a reason it's not called the Ford Wolf.

There in lies the problem that most of the animals humans eat are sentient/can talk in the pony-verse (pigs as the exception), so it seems kind of immoral. Or you could be like Fluttershy and dine on horse brain.
