I have nothing to say except that, I like your flag Seshephe.

If you watch Blind Reactions to it, none of them comment on the apparent drop in quality.
This, to me at least, confirms it was the culture and community that drove the negative reception of it.
I think for the most part individual episodes weren't bad so much as the whole of S3 was just worse than the whole of S2. I thought the premiere was rubbish, for example, where S2's premiere is still the best in the show IMO.

The reaction to season 3 came close.
It was actually good, its just peoples moods were being soured by a never ending stream of nonsensical events.
Yea, I've heard many pony critics say that Season 3 is actually on par with Season 2. The problem with Season 3 was the fact that everything was just so concentrated into 13 episode rather than spread out over 26 episodes.

Coupled with the "bad" premise of EQG, this seemed to confirm a lot of peoples worries that the writers had lost their minds. On top of the 13 episode shenanigans and looming doom of cancellation, this made people think "Holy shit they are going to cancel it! it's obviously the series finale! panic! panic! panic!"

By what standards? Had those episodes been in any other season, that season's quality would still be worse.

WALL OF TEEEEEEEXT!
That, plus Equestria Girls (Which wasn't that bad, even if the premise was enraging.) Plus half-pone. Plus looming dread of cancellation. Plus endless drama.
Plus the end of continuous hate from outsiders, which as much as we like to pretend otherwise, kind of glued this community together. United against the bigots and all that. Once that shit largely stopped except for one or two pricks who didn't get the message, we were left without an enemy to rally around, and that, coupled with the fact that we were a group founded on what amounts to social justice, with a bunch of feminists and MRA's (simplification i know) fighting on the same side for once, led no longer had the same enemy to fight, we started talking to eachother about shit other than ponies.
AND THATS WHEN THE ROOF FELL IN PEOPLE.
We realized
"Holy shit, you actually think males have a hard time?" VS "Holy shit, you think males don't have a hard time? Didn't you notice all this shit we just went through?"
And divided into camps. Yes, a lot of areas remained neutral in this conflict, but it's there in the background, and it's soured the community.
the Social Justice Civil War began. We can't escape it. It's inexorably bound up in our culture at this point. While you may think a lot of it is wingnuts on one side or another, the fact is you are saying that from INSIDE this culture. YOU are a wingnut to most people. Most people view us as "Those people who like my little pony and gender politics." if they actually spend any amount of time talking to us. (Though they may not phrase it that way.)
At least that's my perspective on it.
All this shit just happened during season 3, and then Twilicorn was revealed.

But we made it through.
it's over.
We never have to go through that shit again.
We're exhausted from it, but not down for the count. The SJ war rages on quietly in the background, but people are being more debatey than shoutey because honestly, you can't spend years and years shouting at eachother. Eventually you have to just have a dialogue.

I'm not going to talk about it here.

No, see those are just men. They're dicks. When they develop brain cells and stop discriminating against women, then they evolve and become known as Men. Because REAL Men are pro-feminist.
