I don't think music goes through good or bad patches, in my experience most of the music you keep listening to is only ever a small proportion of what is produced. Quite often it is not what you expect to last; some cynically commercial pop music can end up sounding incredibly profound and some serious non-commercial music ends up sounding like meaningless rubbish. The only thing is you can't predict what will still sound good to you decades later, every new piece of music you listen to subly changes your perception of the music you already know. I am still buying some music that is new.

Krakosov wrote:i used to listen to rap and other mainstreem music in the late 90s and early 2000s when mainstreem music didnt suck as much ass as it does now.

^^^ This and also what I grew up listening to due to parents e.g. Oasis, UB40, Blur, etc, that was when I was under 12/13.

Then I got into Garage, Speed Garage and popular "Dance" music, when I got bored of it everyone else my age got into that music. Again my tastes in music became based on what was on the music channels, music I had heard before and songs I'd downloaded off sites like Limewire.

I then "rediscovered" my interest in Rock at 16 thanks to the girl I was dating at the time who got me briefly into bands like My Chemical Romance, Bullet For My Valentine and Panic! At the Disco :palm: I can fault her too much though as she did get me into Fall Out Boy, a band I still like. When I got bored of those types of bands I heard Nirvana's Nevermind (I'd heard some of Nirvana's songs and enjoyed them before but never checked them out) for the first time and then went through various rock genres, then I got into Neofolk and at the same time into anything "Dreamy". The most recent "new" genre that really interested me is the so called "Witch House" one, and I got into that because they use Black Metal, Pagan, Occult, etc aesthetics.

Today my tastes in music are very eclectic, I could be listening to Classical one minute and DSBM the next. But I tend to stay clear of what’s mainstream as most of it is just crap imo, however I did get into Lana Del Rey after sitting through a terrible top 40 chart show on tv early in the year.

i don't think so

i think contemporary commercial music has for the most part predominately been about getting your hole

it's just become a less hush hush subject so people can be more blunt

and it's not necessarily bad, i mean would it it be better if they were singing the same songs but with words about holding hands?

When I was young, I used to listen to a lot of 80's music and classical music. Now my preferences are all over the place, but my two favorite genres are Symphonic Metal and Gothic Rock.

When little, I didn't really listen to anything special. Mostly just listnened to the music everybody else listened to. Now, I'm more into Folk music, different types of rock and some metal. Also, I sometimes enjoy listening to jazz and blues too.

Bjork is a musical genius. She has a large variety in music, and she can sing in a rather large variety as well. To add on top of this, she is also extremely into being artistic. Some of her videos are very "Wat" worthy, but are very artistic and I'm pretty sure have a 'deeper' meaning then my brain can process, but are awesome anyway. Then, to top it all off, she dresses in some weird ass shit (not in the same way as Lady Gaga does), and the stuff she wears is also very artistic as well.

But, to each their own, and you can like and dislike whatever you want of course. I'd just say North Wiedna should give Bjork a try, before making any conclusion on her (My links are a good start).

Pre-Seventh Grade, I listened to the music my parents did - Ministry, They Might Be Giants, etc.

Seventh Grade, my friends introduced me to Iron Maiden - a veritable epiphany, if you will. I have been into metal ever since, though I have moved within the genre to more Power, Symphonic, Black, and Folk metal, while still listening to Heavy, Speed, Death, and others. Not a fan of Scream or Hair metal though. Or Glam metal...

I haven't stopped liking much stuff from when I was young (though there are some things) but my tastes have expanded a lot over the years as I've learned to appreciate post-rock, hip-hop, metal, and industrial and neofolk.

Rap is not inherently "mainstreem" (sic).

What the fuck? The 90s were one of the most innovative times for music. They marked the beginning of post-rock, shoegaze, a lot of gangsta rap, IDM, much extreme metal, trip-hop, slowcore, and much emo (as well as the beginning of screamo).

Hmmm, this arguement is rather intresing... Honestly I believe both 90s and 50s music is awesome while todays music is well, meh, the 90s and 50s were both good. (And plus the 90s hip hop was good compared to that crap they call modern hip hop)

I've never really been a jazz fan, but that might be because I've just listened to meh jazz. Most things I've heard from my grandpa and such I find boring. Some of the problems seemed to be the songs dragging on forever with nothing happening. And I'm the time that can love a very mellow song that's long, so yeah. Just....something about most Jazz I've heard doesn't interest me.

But I likethis more "jazzy" Sigur Ros song (At least, I think it has more of a "Jazzy" feel, at least in parts).

Soon as you said "jazzy", I knew it had to be Hjartað Hamast (Bamm Bamm Bamm), and I agree that song is great.

The thing is, Hjartað Hamast at least brings the Sigur Rós wall'o'shoegaze and makes the thing sound cool and vaguely ominous/threatening. Whereas too many jazz songs that "swing" just sound like old people dance music to me...

'tis that video where she's crying and the weird-coloured tears go into her mouth, and then up her nose, and... seriously, the video has nothing to do with the song at all.

(I vaguely remember the other video for a single from Vespertine had blatant censorbars, so there might've been nudity in it. This thought was not pleasant to teenaged!me.)

Speakin'o'Björk, Modern Things grooves like whoa, Pluto and Army of Me are metal, and I'll chew my leg off if Human Behaviour doesn't have one of the best basslines ever recorded.
