It would be both refreshing and hilarious.

Kudos.

Wouldn't it? I know great people aren't perfect, and Aang not being a perfect father is kinda understandable with the amount of stuff the Avatar would have to be dealing with, but I don't want every character from the old series to be an awful parent.

I think the only awful parent we've heard of is Toph.

Aang's parents: Never seen
Toph's parents: Over-protective
Katara and Sokka's parents: One died, the other was away in a war
Lin and Suyin's parents: Didn't know their dads, and their mom was crooked cop that let her children get away with everything
Korra's parents: Dad was arrested
Tonraq and Unalaq's parent: Dad banished his own son
Tenzin, Bumi, and Kya's parents: Dad focused on one of his children while neglecting the others
Isn't it obvious? Nick is trying to destroy the family!
[Yes, that was all jocular. I know the actual context, I'm just kidding.]
But seriously, the Avatar universe has a long tradition of bad or absentee parenting. Of course, so does the real world...

Probably, when you think that Aang spent a lot of time training Tenzin and Kya probably had a special connection with Katara through water-bending (and being a girl and all but moving on) Bumi probably felt very left out and lonely at times.

I mean, supposedly, all members of the Air Nation were benders, so why would Aang's children have been any different? They should have all been either waterbenders or airbenders.

1. That's a good idea. Does that mean that Kya (Aang's daughter) is actually an airbender too?
2. Anyway, I feel somewhat disappointed by Toph. I thought she always stood for justice, until she tried to cover up her daughter's crime and destroyed the police report. I know that she didn't want to have a daughter in jail, that, she felt guilty about it afterwards and resigned as Chief of Police, but still...
