I was sitting in art class and this un-musically-educated dude asks me if I like screamo. I was immediately offended, but forgave him for likely not understanding there is a difference between death metal vocals and screamo, so I told him, "screamo, no, death metal, yes." He nodded but didn't seem to comprehend. And then some random guy comes all excited out of nowhere like "hey Dominik (my name)! What do you think of deathcore?"

I turned to him and, failing to control my volume levels, exploded at him with "I hate deathcore!" And then stopping and realizing everyone in the room was looking at me.

My friend was wearing a Megadeth sweatshirt and someone asked asked if a Megadeth was a Transformer.

What is the view of the core genre here?

What core genre? There's hardcore, grindcore, metalcore, crustcore, thrashcore, deathcore, ect... but no core.

I like hardcore punk and most of it's many offshoots.

Perhaps I should be more clear. I don't consider the Anal Cunt variety of Grindcore metal. However, the more technical stuff like Napalm Death is definitely Metal. Not my cup vodka, but metal nevertheless.

I was about to say...you set a serious false dichotomy.

Still, the vast majority of grindcore bands are considered metal, or at least are a mix of metal and punk. Anal Cunt and Terrorizer are the few punky grindcore bands that are well known. Bands like Carcass, Napalm Death, Discordance Axis, Rotten Sound, Nasum, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Cattle Decapitation, Brutal Truth, Nails, Insect Warfare, Aborted, Misery Index etc.....are undeniably metal bands. Many of those evolved out of grindcore into death metal or "deathgrind".

Again, bands that are grindcore have at least some metal in them. Bands that have no metal in them that sound like grindcore would more accurately be considered powerviolence or crust punk. Both of which are good, but the former is probably one of the best punk subgenres ever, despite being small and short lived.

I've had similar experiences. People don't understand when I wear my Blaze in the Northern Sky or Today is the Day t shirts.

My tastes have considerably shifted of late, but I'd still likely say that among my top 10 would be Esoteric's The Maniacal Vale, Opeth's Ghost Reveries, Death's Symbolic and Children of Bodom's Follow the Reaper.

Grindcore is godtier. Hardcore punk is great. Other cores are terrible.

I don't really consider Grindcore metal.

I've tried drone, but I can't get into it. I still like having clear riffs in my music, plus it hurts my ears.

Hardcore is amazing.

Deathcore has a few good, talented bands that usually are lost in the endless sea of not good bands.

Metalcore is a very broad term. I like Hatebreed and Integrity, but not too much of modern metalcore.

Thrashcore/Crossover is kinda cool.

The fact that you say "core" as if it refers to one genre makes me think you're not to familiar with anything that ends with "core".



Grindcore, is, by definition, metal. What makes grindcore not crust punk or powerviolence is the fact that it is thrash/death metal infused.

Having listened to it on repeat at least six times so far, Nightwish's Elan is really starting to grow on me. Was a surprise when I first heard it, was expecting something heavier, but once you listen through it a second time you can really realize how awesome Floor is vocally, and it's not a bad song. I like the flute work, and although the guitars aren't loud and front-stage, they're still there. And the drumming's not half bad either. Keyboarding and arranging is great as always (can Tuomas ever do anything that isn't great?).

So I'm excited for Endless Forms Most Beautiful. Already have had it preordered for a few weeks now, gotta wait a few more weeks and I finally get it.

It's the closest you can get to Drone Metal without being Drone Metal then. It's got all the developing symptoms of Drone Metal.
