Uboa is the best from what I've heard. He doesn't try to be too stereotypically droney and released his album for free. He's also named after a Yume Nikki character, it seems.

They've got a few really typical drone albums, but their best are Flood and -Feedbacker-. The latter is typically considered their magnum opus, but the former is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Earth's later stuff isn't really drone, but if you like Sunn O))), try Earth 2, it's essentially the same thing.

Didn't he give Cobain his shotgun, too? Or was it just the bullets.

Kurt sings on one of their live albums too, I'm sure.

If anyone likes High On Fire or sludge in general, Le Kraken are highly recommended. Like a French HoF except a bit more melodic.

He gave Kurt the shotgun as well. Yeah, on the Sunn Guitars and Smashed Amps comp he does vocals on a track, as well as backing vocals on Bureaucratic Desires...

Nightwish(old schoool with Tarja, Anette sucks), Epica, Xandria, Within Temptation, Leaves Eyes, and Sirenia ftw.

Nonsense, there are plenty of great American metal bands.

And meh, gothic metal is not really my thing. With the exception of Before the Dawn and some death/doom bands like My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost.

True. I know of a few successful metal bands that came from America.

I don't really like Gothic metal, nor any kind of emotional metal for that matter. I just like regular old metal like Slipknot. I also like grunge metal too.

I know of more than a few. But I like lots of emotional metal, just not so much gothic metal.

By the way, grunge and metal are two different genres - Grunge is not metal. And Slipknot is why people think American metal is bad.

No they are not a rare exception, they are one of many. Most metal bands in America are not "corporate". That is just a powerful minority.

Besides the two Wied said, Agalloch, Cormorant, Death and Melvins immediately spring to mind. You should try looking past the super mainstream metal.

Yeah, that was quicker than I expected/wanted. I'll probably be back to them eventually. This Black Metal thing just happened though, and I had to embrace it. I've still listened to a little bit of Amorphis today. But mostly it was a day of Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Altar of Plagues, et cetera. But with some outliers like Amorphis, Mastodon, Breaking Wheel, et cetera.

"Grunge Metal" definitely isn't a genre, and can actually be kind of redundant in some cases.
