Agreed. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why this one guy "Pewdiepie" is so popular on YouTube. Why would anyone want to watch someone play vidya gaemz and add unenlightened commentary? I must be missing something, but then again I am not a gamer.

Another video category that puzzles me are unboxing videos. I can kinda see their purpose, but I can't imagine wanting to sit through one of those videos, much less to actually watch them recreationally.

Its dependent on a lot of factors, I for example grew up watching my Uncle (and even my younger brother sometimes when I'm bored) play games.

So I just have a history of enjoying what other people do.

Not all game related stuff are lets plays either, some are contemplations to show off, others are just silly videos.

For gaming I particularly like GameXplain. I find them to be very informative for upcoming games, never missing the smallest detail. Chuggaconroy and HCBailly are the only Let's Players I give any attention to.

For comedy shows I enjoy The Nostalgia Critic (his videos are still on YouTube, even though he has his own site), Cinemassacre (aka The Angry Video Game Nerd), TheWineKone, and College Humor.

AllTime10s is good for catchy music and random facts. There are probably a ton of music channels out there that I can't be bothered to list.

While the majority of gaming videos are stupid, there are diamonds in that rough. I'm ready to defend Al (the only one I watch on regular basis) since his primary feature has always been playing Fallout mods. By watching him play, I can get an idea if it's worth downloading or not.

Not to mention, montages and his luck is always bad and his reactions to such are priceless.

Pewdiepie is only appealing because so many 9 year olds have made a youtube account with a cringey name then proceeded to find his channel and subscribe because they think screaming in a camera 500 times is interesting.

This list is primarily for YouTubers alone - I'm excluding Lindsey Stirling, Jon Lajoie, Kiesza, and Miracles of Modern Science, for example, because I feel like they've "transcended" the medium. Roosterteeth was also doing work long before Youtube. Nexus Network is just a means to listen to new music.

I don't actually subscribe to anyone, because I can't be arsed signing into YouTube ... whenever I do they seem to send me emails, and an empty inbox is one of life's great pleasures. So instead I have a bunch of YouTubers which autocomplete remembers the URLs for for me.

First up (in my entirely disordered, organically shifting and growing list) is the Yogscast's Duncan and Kim, whose Minecraft videos I generally enjoy. After that is the Yogscast's Hat Films trio, also for their Minecraft output. I go through periods of liking and disliking the Hat Films guys, because they're both funny and horrendously irritating idiot manchildren. I'll occasionally check out the Yogscast's Lewis and Simon, but I honestly prefer their open-world Minecraft shenanigans to their adventure map series, so they haven't had much content for me lately.

Then it's over to the Mindcrack network, where I enjoy Zisteau, Etho, Docm77, BDouble00, GenerikB, Vechz, and Aureylian. Unfortunately their Minecraft server seems to be horribly unstable, so there's almost no Minecraft output there now. Zisteau puts out an entertaining KSP video now and again.

Speaking of KSP, next on my list is Scott Manley and his modded KSP series, but the production of that is intermittent, slowed down by the instability of his kludge of an outdated, heavily modified version of KSP and by the vast amount of time that apparently goes into each video.

From Szyzyg it's on to SciShow, where John Green occasionally has something entertaining. I enjoyed the Crash Course World History series, and SciShow affiliate Emily Graslie of TheBrainScoop is entertaining, although her video output has dropped. I preferred her show when it was all about peeling critters.

After that I'll occasionally pop in to Arumba07 and Quill18, but I go through phases of liking EUIV and CK2, and right now I find it more boring than not. While I like Civ5, unfortunately I find Marbozir's accent almost indecipherable, so his collaboration videos with Quill18 aren't that entertaining for me.

My YouTube perusal ends with LoadingReadyRun, Canada's best posse of internet comedians. After that I'm off to other parts of the Internet - usually the LoadingReadyRun website, followed by the few people I read on Twitter, John Scalzi's blog, the NotAlwaysRight family of sites, and then NationStates to browse the latest headlines in NSG, Moderation, and the Secret Mod Lair. Sometimes this circuit takes hours; other times it takes minutes. It all depends who's published something I care to watch (or read, or listen to) since I last went around.

I've been watching a lot of DangerDolan, recently.

Favourites, though? I'd put JonTron, DangerDolan (still), Brutalmoose, Caddicarus, YourMovieSucksDOTorg, 5secondfilms, SciShow and Saturday Night Live, which totally isn't just an account for uploading the clips of a far more popular show of the same name. :D

Considering probably 60% of the internet population is tweens and teens, and because gaming is popular in culture right now, it's really not hard to figure out why people like Pewdiepie are popular. Hell, I could probably come up with a scientific equation for it:

Audience with high sense of amusement + Guy/girl who plays popular video games + YouTube channel of said guy/girl = Popular YouTuber.

I shall call it "Tori's Theory of YouTuberization".

Yeah, I kind of noticed a trend in his videos. Fair enough, it could be intended on his part.

Nevertheless, that is the main reason why I dislike him- because I don't think snark and sarcasm have a place in a topic of such seriousness and gravity.

AiG's videos, on the other hand, are not obnoxious in that sense. What annoys me is that they seem to say that they, and they alone, have the truth, and any other theories are all wrong regardless of evidence that says otherwise.

Right, AiG... different topic. They're irritating in quite the inverse. I respect Christian apologists who actually heed science and so forth, but I don't consider Ham's organization to be worthy of it.

TAA targets a lot of people who deserve nothing but derision, though - people like Anita Sarkeesian. I certainly do not agree with everything he has to say (for example: I hold that Neil Degrasse Tyson is a brilliant scientist that really needs to keep his mouth shut when it comes to the humanities), but he's entertaining and relevant where it matters.

I see what you mean regarding both. People like AS can be a little, if not very, irritating at times.

However, I recall watching one of TAA's videos back, titled "Refuting the Resurrection". That is, if you can even call it a refutation. It was nothing more than him interjecting "What's more likely? People hallucinating or someone rising from the f-cking dead?" over and over again in one of WLC's speeches. I was quite annoyed, probably because I was hoping for a proper refutation and got nothing but one liners. Considering the amount of research and study that has been devoted to the study of the Resurrection, I felt that he should have given a more thoughtful and in-depth "refutation".

He does have some videos I like, though, such as the one about logical fallacies (which I thought he put quite succinctly, if a little biased against the religious views).
