In another one of my worlds, a Dalek spawned right where I needed to get sheep. I wasn't able to get wool until it despawned.

What about a Civil War-era American?

I find that period fascinating, and seeing someone from that long ago try to deal with modern and futuristic stuff would be interesting. At the same time, they'd probably be more able to cope than someone from, say, 500 years ago. The Civil War was around the time that the Theory of Evolution and the Industrial Revolution entered the world. It was a taste of modern warfare at the dawn of the modern age.
