Not to mention I"m pretty sure Equestria's sailors appreciated and still appreciate her night. The moon is the provider of tides, a key thing to consider in leaving and entering harbors, and when all other means of navigation fail, it is the stars that can be used to guide ones way on the sea. Of course since those sailors were well sailing, its possible that they didn't show off that appreciation as much at home.

Which may partially explain other reasons for Pipsqueak thinking Luna is best Princess given his pirate costume.
