As a past example:

• At one point in the past (when Grub was still Delegate I think), I created a region called 100000 Islands (or something like that) to parody XKI and I imitated their WFE.
• This resulted in the WFE being wiped and being warned to not do it again by a game moderator.

For a more up to date example:

• A player at least a month back created a region called Lazarene League (the theme of our region),
• The player copied our WFE near exactly, except changing the colors.
• The player then parodied the WFE and made links to YouTube videos.

I am curious where game moderators draw the line on this sort of thing these days.

I make no claim of understanding of Game Mod functionality, but I’d hazard to guess that it depends on whether it has been reported or not.

It looks like you have an open task regarding this case, which is the correct way to ask the question - that'll be handled when gameside is back up.

I will note that when considering cases of malicious impersonation of regions, similiarities of name would likely be discounted when the allegedly impersonated region is a game-created region.

That's interesting then, though also makes sense. It is fairly bad to have a unique user created region impersonated, and people could probably work out the obvious with game created regions anyway.

There have been similarly named regions for the feeders (e.g. North Pacific and South Pacific for a couple of decades. That's not to say malicious impersonation couldn't happen for a GCR, but there's a higher bar to cross for them.
