How can I get text to appear to the left of the screen, next to a picture with it's capition...?

Actually, the top text is at the left. You either have the coding right because you mixed up floatright and floatleft because the pic and caption are both floatright, or you made the text too large.

I don't want it at the top though, I want them side by side.

So all on the left or right, because this means you might have mixed up the floatright and floatleft tags.

No, the caption is placed correctly, I want the other bits of text moved. And both have the correct placement

Your text is too wide. It thus fills up the entire width of the page and cannot be placed to the left of the image. (or: the image can no longer be placed to the right of it, since the text itself is already taking up that space). Solution: add carriage returns.

EDIT: adjust the width of your browser window both larger and smaller, to see the effect of when the image jumps to a position below the text.
