I loved it, but that lag.....
Improve the server maybe? I think that costs money so I doubt it will happen.

I highly doubt NationStates is a money-concern for Max. NationStates is just one of the more clever marketing ideas ever created by a book author to help increase book sales. Max makes a healthy amount from his day job, I am sure. NationStates does not need to be a profit-center for it to be a success. Every player on his site is that much more likely to buy or read his books, which is the ultimate goal here.

More players and more server demand is a net win for Max. Whatever minor server costs he pays are payed back 10x over in book sales.

Stop thinking of NationStates as a business. It's just one of his marketing departments for Max's real business.

I ain't thinking of NationStates as a business. I'm thinking of it as a casual site for advertising his books, which it is. Dumping time and money into implementing permanent gameside features and upgrading servers wouldn't make more people buy his books, or bring him any more advertising money than he already gets; it would just take time and money away from his life and be an inconvenience for everyone on the site for a while. Maybe more people would come to the site, maybe, but NS already grows fairly regularly and the very long term advantages wouldn't really pay back the maintenance and upgrade fees.

Even if it is as low as 1%, then he has gained > 1 Million readers. Max is a marketing genius IMO.

I'm going to buy some of his books, do you recommend any?

Like I said earlier, he could also save money by switching hosts because the provider that he currently uses (eSecureData) is pretty expensive and he could get cheaper servers with better performance elsewhere.

If the lag wasn't so terrible while it was there, I would vote yes. Because that is not the case and the lag was absolutely horrid, I vote no.

Keeping bytecoins:

Pros:
-Fun
-More content

Cons:
-Lag
-LAG
-Deviates from original game idea
-The guy with the most bytecoins had trillions of trillions more than the next guy did, and probably more than everyone else combined. He was literally unbeatable unless he took a long, long vacation
-Exchanges would need to be re-worked probably
-Some other thing I started typing and then forgot. Maybe it eats away parts of your brain?

ByteCoin ruined many aspects of gameplay while it was active, and ruined many aspects of... well.... just being able to use the site without being logged out 50 times or waiting 3 minutes for each page to load.

The servers are made to handle a nation-building simulation, not to handle a stockmarket simulation. And my god did it show. A big fat NO.

It was fun while we had it but it lagged the bejesus out of the site - plus it's kind of lost on those of us who work or do other things 9 - 5.

There was some debate about whether the ByteCoin prices were market-driven or just some dumb random algorithm. I can now confirm that a true market mechanism was always the only acceptable option for ByteCoin, up until about March 31 when I realized how hard that was to code. So it was a dumb random algorithm. Except for Titanfall, which was a plan by some big ByteCoin players to try to crash the market by all selling at once, which I caught wind of and simulated to freak them out. That was fun.

Only if it is programmed as a true market mechanism, and it updates less frequently, and we can buy stocks/invest in NPC corporations.

Three people that you labeled as generalites 'complaining' about the lack of things to do on this thread aren't.

  • Cerb - The previous delegate of the 10000 islands as with any delegate of the 10000 islands their vote can change how the current majority vote is in the WA in a heartbeat.
  • Norway - My puppet. I'm active in gameplay, International Incidents, technical, and got issues. I was once the delegate of Balder; however, let's not go there.

So try not to stereotype.

While to everyone complaining that site would continue to lag if it were implemented. Please read the whole thread before you post.

Shadow Afforess wrote:I'm rather annoyed at all the posters here who think that keeping ByteCoin (and other NS related games) as an option would mean the site gets tons of traffic every day. That is absurd idea, bordering on downright idiotic. Most of the people would stop caring and the people who still want to play would keep playing. The hype would die down, like it inevitably does with any new thing.

Even if I am wrong, the ByteCoin stayed popular, and NS got tons more traffic every day, that is still a good thing. Max would make that much more from ads and the store, could invest in better/more servers for NS, and everyone would be happy.

I would however support a petition that forced technical forum posters to pass basic competencies on spelling, grammar, the internet, and technology. :palm:

If the site had a paypal donate button and the donations went exclusively towards a new server. I would donate maybe even weekly; if not monthly.

You do know that your only talking about one point correct?

Don't ignore my other statement, why talk to me in such a one when your post has jack shit with what I was doing?

My no was a sign of disapproval to a noob post about NSG, as well as the post about (And I am not saying it directly the same way or whatever.) "Why post in a thread to keep bytecoin?

I see no reason for your post to bring up the lag issue at all, nor do I see any evidence that traffic surrounding it would die in due time.

Even then why make it harder on people to keep a shitty thing which was used for a April Fools joke, o you know how many people would bitch about keeping the zombie feature?

This was used as a special thing, it should stay that way, if you don't like it then use something else, IIRC Leningrad is making something for people who like Bytecoin.

You do know what causes lag correct?

Internet lag is primarily a function of direct strain either on the servers processing capability or its capability to dispatch data. As in too many things for the server to do or too many people trying to access it at once. If the case is purely #2 than we would indeed have seen a drop in lag as the excitement died down proportionate to said drop in excitement. However if with #1 things get a lot more complicated and depend heavily on how the setup is coded. Since in this case we likely have a combination of both it is likely that we would have seem some drop in lag but not as much as could be expected from a direct proportion with the drop in excitement.

Take it from a programmer.
