New Reports page (beta)

Postby [violet] » Thu Sep 12, 2013 5:17 pm

Hello all! A new version of the "Reports" page is currently in testing:

http://www.nationstates.net/page=reports2

Please take a look and provide feedback!

This feature has come about after Afforess provided excellent proof-of-awesomeness in his NS++ tool with "Live Happenings".

There is also a related Happenings API currently in testing.

Ballotonia tells me I should emphasize that this tool is not quite as real-time as it may appear, and thus not an Ultimate Game-Changing Anti-Invasion Device like you might think. In particular, its results aren't any more real-time than the existing Reports page, except for the fact that it periodically auto-refreshes, which saves you from having to press F5. The data can be delayed anywhere from 0 to 30 seconds, or even more, if you leave the screen open for a long time.

The main aim of this feature is to make visible the vibrancy and activity of the world, and especially in your own region.

EDIT Ballotonia:
PAGE IS NOW LIVE
New URL: http://www.nationstates.net/page=activity

I notice Chrome giving me notification boxes with some of the filter changes:

Pretty cool.

From an R/D standpoint:

Positives:
1. We can see nations moving right on their own page.
2. We can see nations endorsing right on their own page
3. The page doesn't break everything

However, there's a quite annoying negative. We're unable to set how far back we want these reports to load, which means that the page is loading significantly slower than it could be (I think). Would it be possible to continue having the "Show reports from the last X hours" page?

I got more or less the same error as Afforess did.

There's no impact on load times, because this is using the new backend Happenings engine. It's just as fast no matter what time window of data you want.

To be clear, if we are using the regular reports page is that information still real-time at the moment we refresh the page?

Before anyone asks, don't worry folks, I'll get any sort of dark-theme-related bugs dealt with over the weekend. Thankfully, it's doesn't seem to be anything too worrisome.

The page looks great, though!

Yes, and this is also true for the new one. It's just the auto-refreshing results that are delayed.

Incidentally, you can refresh the new Reports page by clicking the title ("Reports v2 Beta"), which is a little quicker than F5 since it saves your browser from having to re-load all the images, stylesheets, and other stuff you don't care about.

Looks quick, looks great! I like it. It's interesting that it records beyond a tagged nation's/region's NH/RH.

I'm on Safari on an iPad, and I got this minor glitch.

On the second-to-newest report, it says this:

"Following new legislation in Aequalitia, Bodobol is notorious for its citizen's infidelity."

Other than that, though, I like it.

The real reports page when we refresh and data pops up, *that* is real time, yes?

This new page is really awesome, but can we get those exact time elements everywhere? ;)

So they'll just jam F5 or whatever to refresh the content thereby avoiding the delay? Is that correct? Because really I'm looking at this right now I cannot think of anything else to add to it to make it more overpowered. Yikes. We don't want the game to be dominated by scripts, so anytime someone makes a technological advancement we make it available to everyone, thereby spurring more technological advancement, thereby forcing admin to make it available to everyone. Repeat ad infinitum.

It's almost like the current reports page, meaning that this doesn't change the dynamics of gameplay but instead looks cool for the users who don't participate in gameplay!

Your reports page by default can show you everything that happens to every nation in the game? Kinda doubt it. Also, look at my broader commentary.

How do you think I made my version. I used the original reports page. So yes, it can too show you everything. ;)

This is a feature and not a bug. Normal people call it "Progress".
